Is there an advantage of SS barrels vs. carbon steel in the M1A?

We have one of each in the safe. Both are "Loaded" models on synthetic stocks, with the full length 22" barrels. Mine has the carbon steel barrel, and my son's has the stainless barrel.

I can't see any real advantage to the stainless barrel, other perhaps than easier cleaning, and whatever additional resistance to chemicals and the elements which are natural to stainless steel.

The disadvantage to the stainless barrel is that it is very bright and shiny. That may or may not be an issue for you in a hunting/tactical situation. Like I said, my son's is the one with the stainless barrel, and he has wrapped his in a camo tape to cut down on that glare.

Accuracy seems about the same for both rifles. I think it probably boils down to a matter of personal preference. I bought my son his rifle as a Christmas gift. I didn't set out to buy him a stainless barreled example of an M1A. I set out to buy him any one I could get my hands on. This one was available, it was local, and it was in my price range; so I bought it.

He's not complaining.

Carbon steel barrels have better out of the box accuracy, quicker break in but, shorter barrel life. Stainless barrels take longer to reach peak accuracy but keep that accuracy for a longer period. This is only an issue if you shoot lots of rounds like a NRA high power competitor would. For the average Joe either will be great just remember the SS barrel will take longer to achieve peak accuracy.
