Well in about a week ill be moving out to fort worth from San Diego, ca. and i want to get my CHL, But my question that i cannot seem to find an answer for is, since it takes 6 months to be considered a resident, should i apply for a non resident or should i just wait till i can apply for a resident CHL? And if i do apply for the non resident would it become void if i became a resident?

Thanks guys for any input :tiphat:

The requirement for six months of residency was done away with a couple legislatures ago. So, apply as soon as you get here! And welcome! :txflag:

Officially: You are eligable as soon as you establish residence. When you get your Texas DL & have an address.

Welcome to one of the best places to glean information on Texas CHL issues around. The guys and gals here represent a wide range of experiance from long time gun enthusiasts to very recent converts, preachers to LEO, native Texans and immigrants from all over the world.

Ask a question on here and you WILL receive answers, good ones but also some levity and humor does abound.

I have posted these same words myself, in this very forum,, and yet still.. When I read them in response to a new user I hear in my head..

So, where ya living? Do you keep your guns in a safe? What are your thoughts on home protection alarm systems? Do you have a dog? What ya wearing………….. :biggrinjester:

LOL.. To the OP in my best, not creepy voice.. Welcome to TexasCHL.. San Diego, CA to Texas…… Makes me think Military move or School move?

Let us know where you’re at, and you’ll get a host of local info from shops to browse to a good CHL class instructor.

If you're moving in a week, my suggestion is get a TX DL and take the class and send in the application ASAP when you arrive. In my case, I had more lead time, so I took the class the day after I interviewed and sent the application as a non-resident. After I got the job and relocated and had a TX DL, I sent DPS my change of address. No gap in coverage.

Fort Worth is not far from where I live in Grapevine. Maybe we can show you around a bit.

Thanks ya'll for the responses and the warm welcome, im moving out to fort worth to help out my brothers family, he is going back to iraq and asked me to look after them while he is gone. @cbr600 i plan on getting all my stuff IE registration and DL as soon as i get there. @bronco78 ill be living with my brothers familiy till he gets back then ill go out and find myself a place on my own, i do have a large safe and as for alarms, ive never used one so i cant say anything about them my dogs have always been our alarms but unfortunately they will be staying in San Diego with my family here, and im wearing my pink silk negligee just for you lol ill be in saginaw so any info for the area that is hiring and good CHL classes are appreciated.

So leaving it at that as soon as i get my DL and registration done i can apply for a resident CHL?

Thanks for the warm welcome

Yes, welcome. I lived in Northern California for about 20 years ... I miss the mild weather but I sure have learned to love Texas. I so enjoy being able to carry in our state capitol in Austin. You can't do that in California. Keep on posting.
