NEVER AGAIN!!!

With the unbelievable acts of the Louisiana government taking the firearms of law abiding citizens in the aftermath of Katrina, an outrage has prompted action.

President Bush has signed into law the "Disaster Recovery Personal Protection" bill. This states that no entitiy can confiscate the firearms of a law abiding citizen during a natural disaster. To read a little more, go here.

Unfortunately this was necessary even though a bit redundant. We all know we have the right to arms, but with this in place, ignorant local governments can now be held accountable if they intrude.

Can I get a Hoorah for our Prez?

The President and Congress did right.

Now, down the road, when a disaster occurs, is this law going to stop some mayor or police chief from attempting to confiscate citizens' firearms? I hope so. It's not a sure thing. New York and New Jersey violate federal law all the time.

It wasn't going to happen (uncontested) in this household, new law or not.

I agree Flint...I would have to go outlaw in that situation! When I watched this story unfold on Fox news during the storm...I dang near sat in my living room and cried.

edit to add: It is hard to go outlaw when you are within the law....but ya know what I mean

Yes we know what you mean. I also am to the place that someone is going to have to say, you will not take them.
Yes we have recorse in court after the fact. There has got to come some time when freedom & the Constitution is worth defending from domestic enemies.
Not a fight a single household is apt to win. All Texas patriots could not fight at San Jacento. Some had to defend the Alamo.

Actually we were all born with the right to defend ourselves, no legislation required. Now, it has been put into a law that can be repealed at any time.

That is what I like about Texas at least no one can declare us an outlaw by law....Learned that in Governmet Class in College today.

I did not go to High school in Texas, So I am learning all kinds of things.

The bill has nothing to do with your legal ability to defend yourself. It is only enforcing the right to bear arms and banning infringement. Don't try to read anything other than that. Its not a law designed to be repealed.

the best way to prevent gun seizures from happening is to have a plan already in place. You MUST become close with all of your neighbors, especially those that have guns. You MUST, as a whole, believe in keeping your guns. You MUST, and this is the biggest, be ready 'as a whole' to repel any government force that has the intention of seizing your weapons. It will get bloody, unfortunately, but it is going to be the ONLY way to give a politician, or LEA, pause about giving such an order again. If everyone just relents and lets themselves be disarmed and moved out, they will only be emboldened to do it again and again.

My question in this matter is: Why has the old NOLA police chief (Compass?) and ALL others who participated in this act of treason not been arrested??

Passing these laws saying, "you can't do it" really bothers me, frankly. We already have something enforceable in place ... the Constitution. Why isn't action taken on its behalf instead?

This is a serious question. Something can be wrong and yet not obviously a crime that can be charged. Things like that usually end up as civil rights lawsuits.

But mud like that is hard to make stick, like you say...

I'm sure there is a Lousiana statute that covers this...

But if it hasn't happened by now...The opportunity to strike while the iron is hot is gone...

I'd still sue the stink out of the officials, city, county and state in small claims though...

And out of a matter of principle, as a condition of settlement, order those very same officials who went public with this policy to publically apologize to everyone involved and the public in general for their poor judgement during this crisis, when they could have been doing better things for the community than consentrate on something that was absolutely not a problem...

Sorry, went on a rant there...

But thats just how I feel...
