Someone has to say it, get a 1911.
Seriously the Glock 36 kicks like a drug crazed mule. If your a recoil junkie you may like it, but for me, it is very uncomfortable to shoot. You might want to try to find one to shoot before buying.
Try out one of the many smaller 1911 style guns. They are slightly slimmer than some of the other polymer framed offerings and don't weight much more.

After reading you post again I have to ask how you are carrying? What holster and belt?
Unless I'm mistaken, and you really want to go .45acp, then about the smallest in barrel length you'll get is around 3".
If the boss is going to get you a gun then by all means get a new gun

, but if you really like you XD the maybe you can reevaluate how you are currently carrying.
Maybe a one of the subcompact XD.

Check out the Taurus PT-145. It's the same size as a subcompact XD9 but chambered in .45ACP. 10+1 rounds at your disposal.

The Glock 36 is called a "slimline" because it is thinner then doublestack .45's not shorter. A small difference in size can have more of a difference in comfort then you might believe without trying it. I have found that the height makes more of a difference then length in comfort, but thats for me, you really need to try something before you buy it to get an idea how it will work for you; everyone is different.
As far as recoil with the 36 my 5' 0", 105 lb daughter uses one with no problems, she prefers it over the G19 (9mm). Compact 1911 are usually even thinner then the G36 and will have less recoil due to the weight, downside is they are substantially heavier.
I have both a compact 1911 and a G36. G36 is more comfortable to carry but that is due to my shape (overweight). If you are in the Conroe area you are welcome to try both of mine before making a choice.

As a very happy Kahr owner, I'd also suggest looking at a Kahr P45.
EDIT: If slimmer is better, then I'd highly suggest looking at the Kahr.

MAybe a silly question, but you ever consider an XD subcompact?

I agree with glockamolie. I have a XD9 4" and bought a Kahr PM9 for a BUG now I carry the Kahr all the time. I'm thinking about a shoulder rig for the XD so it doesn't get so neglected. Slimmer is better in the heat.

This demonstrates how different people are. For me the g36 was very difficult to hold during recoil. I also don't find the weight difference to be very much. Thank goodness gun makers have listened and make such a variety of guns.
Kimber and Springfield make very nice compact 1911's. Since you live in Aggieland, go check out Champions Firearms. I beleive they have a few of the smaller 1911's as well as the G36 to rent. Thier prices also seem to be pretty good.
Also, ditch the Walmart belt and get a good thick gun belt. It makes all the difference. Tucker leather makes a fine belt. Rafter S belts are very good and a bit more inexpensive. The rafter S belts also offer 7 holes instead of 5 for more adjustability. Can't comment on Tucker's hole arrangement.
You have a great holster. Have you tried to adjust it so that it rides higher? If that doesn't work you could try a Brommeland Max con V or Milt Sparks Versa Max 2. Both hold the gun very high.

Taurus Millenium Pro PT-145 or Kahr 45 would be your best bet for a small 45!
