anyone know if the thumb safety can be added to an S&W M&P that didn't come with one, or is it a factory only install?

It can be added. No idea what it costs. My 45 came with the thumb safety.

Your most reliable sources of info about M&P pistols are Smith & Wesson Customer Service and the very knowledgeable people at the M&P Pistol forum (http://mp-pistol.com/boards/" onclick="window.open(this.href);return false;)

It does not appear that a thumb safety can be added to a pistol manufactured without one.

I'll bet that S&W can put one on if you send them the pistol. One of the above links has a post describing how to do it, posted by someone who did it to his own pistol.

Mine has the safety, and I like having it on for when I'm loading/unloading the pistol or otherwise handling it, but I always switch it off after holstering the pistol. I think that if I were buying another one today, I'd probably skip the safety.

thanks.

the discussion there seems to be you have to get it from the factory with the thumb safety - S&W won't sell the parts and the internals are different (may not be the case for the 45ACP).

I prefer a manual safety, so I'm either going to put this on the Glock (cover your ears for the screams from the purists):

or trade for a S&W M&P with a thumb safety.

I emailed S&W and they said the thumb safety cannot be added afterwards.

GHOSTRIDER,
Another member posted this link on a Glock safety.

My lower is there right now.All the Glock people are probably cringing now,but after shooting 1911's for about 20 years, and cramming the Glock between the seat and console of my H3 Hummer,I feel better with a thumb safety.Just my 2c
