I'm still amused by the Campus Police Chief opposing Concealed carry ("civilians with guns on campus? We're trained to kill")
Ummm Chief, are you saying you can't recognize the professors in the Hines building teaching criminal Justice, you know, where they also teach hostage negotiation to Law Enforcement officers from all over the Nation, and also can't differentiate between a student hiding under a desk from a guy walking desk to desk executing people?
(Now I'm afraid of the "three officers on duty" I propose they attend some more "shoot-don't shoot" training.) But seriously, what are we supposed to do while they set up a perimeter and negotiate for 6 or 7 hours, other than hide under a desk and wait our turn to be executed? :banghead: ... That's what Twitter is for I guess, and down-loadable cell phone games? (That's what some did at UT)

By a vote of 24-10[ii], Texas State University, the sixth largest university in Texas[iii] (with over 32,500 students[iv]), became the first postsecondary institution in the state to pass a resolution endorsing “campus carry.

The students at Texas State should be commended for educating themselves on a complex issue that has been completely misrepresented by gun control activists and certain elements of the mainstream media.”

Today ASG senators will vote on behalf of the student body to either support the current university policy, or issue a statement advocating the policy be changed to allow concealed firearms in university buildings.
----------------

San Marcos Police Department Chief Howard Williams said Friday that SMPD would not be involved in the forum because UPD has jurisdiction over the university.

“I don’t see any magic in being on a college campus that just automatically makes you safer, and if the rationale is that people can defend themselves, I can understand why the university would want it,” he said.

“There seems to be a certain sanctity to a campus, but they had that same feeling at Virginia Tech and at about 20 other colleges,” he said. “There is no magic fence around our campus.”

When I was a student at Texas A&M, they had a vote on whether or not we should support campus carry....thanks to ill informed students, it failed.

Great, now TCU is a leg up on us in 2 things.....football and rational students. :banghead:

All joking aside, good for them! Hopefully others will follow.

My cousin is retired from Associated Press; he was there and covered the Charles Whitman shooting at University of Texas, where police had to ask civilians to help ... a little news story tip has been sent, Don't know if anything will become of it. (or the ones sent to reuters,CBS,ABC,NBC, Fox)

But, it IS the first University in the State of Texas to ...

So, it's actually National news, if not worldwide.

A link to this Thread, and the links etc in the top post were included in the news tip.

For any reporters visiting here, for your convenience, this is a link to

Here's an article, with photo, about the vote
http://www.newstreamz.com/2010/11/30/as ... esolution/" onclick="window.open(this.href);return false;
The Texas State student senate sent a message Monday to school administrators and representatives in Austin: allow individuals with concealed handgun licenses to carry firearms on campus.

Student senators voted 25-10 in favor of a resolution opposing the university’s current ban on concealed handguns.

Senators drafted the resolution on the spot after a resolution in favor of the university’s current policy (to prohibit licensed concealed handgun carriers, including, but not limited to Graduate students, Criminal Justice Professors, other faculty, staff and students) fell by a 27-23 vote.

Senator Adam French authored the defeated pro-status quo resolution. However, French said he personally supports allowing CHL holders to bring their handguns on campus,

After the pro-status quo legislation was defeated, Senator Tyler Crump immediately authored the pro-concealed carry resolution.

French said he voted for the second resolution.

See link above for more details.

Just out of curiosity, is the Student governing body resolution binding or does it need approval from above before this takes effect?

As I've pointed out before; the majority of the people on any campus eligible for a CHL are faculty, staff, grad students and nontraditionals. None of those are the typical party-animal, hungover-in-class college student that the opponents of campus carry are pointing to as such a danger.

I've talked to a couple of campus cops who mentioned that most of the students they wouldn't want carrying have already racked up at least a class B misdemeanor by the time they turn 21, so they won't be eligible for a CHL until they're out of college one way or another.

I don't have time today, but maybe someone here would have the time to post in this thread, for the benefit of any reporters, what exactly that means. That by allowing CHL holders to carry on campus as they already safely do everywhere else that it means the people affected are 21 and older, background checked, took an extensive training course, took a shooting exam, etc etc. I'm thinking just laying out the facts that a reporter would typically need as background info.

It's a statement of position that was voted on, to either support the current school policy ban (failed) (which could be changed by the University, to allow concealed carry, even under current law, like Harold ISD allows for Kindergarten-12th grade schools) or in opposition of the current policy banning licensed concealed carriers inside the buildings (passed, but could be vetoed, then another vote would take place.)

http://www.newstreamz.com/2010/11/30/as ... esolution/" onclick="window.open(this.href);return false;
The pro-concealed carry resolution is to be used “as a means of creating a formal, representative statement on behalf of the majority of Texas State students only , and not a means for creating a policy or implementing an action,” in the language of the resolution.

Associated Student Government (ASG) President Melanie Ferrari is expected to either veto, sign, or refrain from acting on the resolution Wednesday. The resolution will be automatically approved if Ferrari takes no action.

Ferrari said she will take into account views expressed at last week’s forum, Monday’s ASG discussion, the vote counts on the resolutions, and meetings with her constituents, before taking action on the resolution. If Ferrari vetoes the legislation, it may come back before senators in the spring semester. Senators may override Ferrari’s veto by a two-thirds vote.

I can tell you for a fact THEY ARE NOT THE FIRST. My campus's Student Government Association's (Texas A&M University at Galveston) Student Senate voted for (it passed) a resolution endorsing the ability for those with CHLs to carry on campus on November 21st.

Edit: Clarified that it passed.

You guys must have had a head start in the race of University Student Governments to Advise the Universities and State Legislature that we would rather be able to to live, rather than try to fend off an AK-47 with a ballpoint pen.

I've heard a pen is mightier than a sword, but not mightier than an AK-47.

I hadn't heard that you guys did that too, until now.

Do you have news links/school paper links etc. regarding that or anything you can supply here?

Universities already have the power to allow concealed carry, but none do; So far, only kindergarten-12th grade schools at Harold ISD allow it.

I edited a few posts above, "In the news" KXAN apparently added the story to a second link ... I'm guessing due to heavy server traffic, everyone worldwide going to the first one.
So, I added the other in the post above.
One has reader comments, the other is blank, no comments from readers yet, but it will lessen the load on them by having two pages I'm guessing.

It's under "Top Stories" and under "Education" and "Latest News" now, or something like that.
One page loads a little slower, due to traffic, bloggers linking to it etc., I suppose.

Funny response from Wall Street Journal's editor news tip box
"The recipient's mailbox is full and can't accept messages now.
