I am looking to purchase my first 1911 and i am torn between one chambered in 9mm or 45ACP. All the pistols i own are either 9mm or 45 so i am comfortable with either caliber though i feel i shoot 9mm a little better. Do 1911's chambered in 9mm function just as well as ones in 45ACP? Any personal experience and advice is greatly appreciated.

Do you want a full size pickup with the big block v8 or the econo-v6? The v8 can't go as far without refueling, but the power is nice.

Seriously. . . I love the .45 in 1911 and as a self-defense round period. Your only compromise is capacity, but 6-8 rounds is adequate, and you can hide additional magazines if you're really worried about it.

Most people seem to agree that not only is the 1911 the most convenient way to carry .45 - but the slim, curved styling of the 1911 takes up less room for IWB than most polymers or popular .40s.

For 9mm you should check out the Browning Hi Power. Also a John Browning design, very flat and vary concealable for a service pistol, terrific ergonomics, somewhat smaller than the 1911, but way more rounds -- an I am firmly convinced having more rounds handy is more effective than having slightly fatter bullets.

I picked up an STI Spartan in 9mm, and so far, it's run great.

I have 2 1911's in 9mm... I have a Springfield Armory 1911-A1 Stainless and a Kimber Gold Match Stainless... Love them both..

I agree whole heartily. I too want a 9mm 1911. The mags are the key from what I hear and everyone else has stated. The EMP is the best package for concealment. It is super accurate, but if you are wanting a range toy I would go with a full size model. If the Browning Hi Power tickles your fancy by looks and feel also check out the CZ 75. I personally like the CZ better. BUT...aimsurplus has some nice Hi Powers for sale right now that I would love to pick up and they are cheap!

You can get a widebody 1911 for up to 14 rds. Capacity isnt an issue.

I enjoy shooting 9mm in a 1911.

Did y'all know that, by and large, the holster for a 1911 is also the holster for a Browning Hi Power? At least, my 1911 Don Humes and 1911 plastic holsters fit both of my 1911's and my Hi Power. The high priced hoity-toity holsters may say differently?
