Several years ago, when I first obtained my CHL, my daughter was about 16 or so, she was scared of my pistol...even worried that it would go off by itself just sitting on the table. I did my best to explain how it worked and that her fear couldn't happen. Try as I could I never could get her interested in shooting.

Fast forward about eight years to this past December when out of the blue she asked me if she could keep a gun in her apartment. I explained the laws to her.....Castle Doctrine, Motorists Protection Act, etc.....but I didn't pursue why the change in attitude. I told her that we would go to the range one day and let her shoot. She agreed and our schedules finally worked out. As we were getting ready to go I let her hold some of my pistols. I first gave her my Ruger LCP as I thought it would be a good size to carry in her purse. As she handled it, she commented that it seemed small. So next I gave her my Taurus 24/7 Pro Compact 9mm..." Now this is more like what I had in mind!" "Does it come in pink?"

Anyway, we went to the range. She shot the Ruger one time and put it down "I don't like it!" She picked up the Taurus and used it the rest of the time. She did quite well for never having shot a gun before...hitting the B-27 target in the torso area with almost every shot. When we were done, she took one of her better targets with her. A few days ago, I
stopped by her place and saw that she had fastened that target to her garage wall right in front of her car.

We've talked about her getting her CHL, but I reminded her in the mean time that she could keep a gun in her car. However, she found out that her employer has a no guns in cars in their parking lot policy. .

She's looking forward to our next range trip and I'm looking forward to some father-daughter range time...

It sounds like your daughter is just a year or two younger than mine. When mine was moving out of the dormitory into her first apartment in Austin, I was getting her up to speed with a Makarov to send with her, figuring that if got stolen, we'd only lose a $200 gun.

As we were finishing up the session, she noticed my brand new PM-9 with night sights sitting on the counter. She picked it up, checked the chamber, dry fired a couple of times, did a little serious coon fingering and said "Dad, I REALLY like this one."

...I haven't heard that one since the 80s..."coon fingering"...gotta love it...and that you guys are raising a generation of gun-totin' mothers to carry on...keep up the good work...

I love it, my Mom in a convert so this story is great.

Commander - I'm heartened that she didn't like the LCP right away,
just because it's small. She gravitated towards the larger pistola - that 'a girl.

By the way, can you define the differences between your Taurus 24/7 Pro compact,
and a Millenium or an "OSS"? To me, the 24/7 Pro's seem very similar to the OSS,
but the 24/7's look almost like a Millenium.

I believe the primary differences are (1) capacity - the 24/7 Pro Compact comes with two mags - 17+1 with extended mag or 13+1 with standard mag and if I remember correctly - 10+1 in the Millenium, (2) rails for mounting lights or lasers, (3) the "Ribber" grips. There may be some other small differences that I'm not aware of....

As far as "coon fingering" I think it refers to a Raccoon's tendency to use their front paws to dig through trash cans, picnic baskets, etc looking for food. They tend to make a real mess of what they dig through....

Thanks for the reply. The GenOne Millenium PT-111's are 10 + 1 in 9MM (mine).
The current model PT-111's are 12 + 1 in 9MM.

I guess the addition of the Picatinny rail and the rubber grips are the difference that
makes for a different Taurus model designation (your Pro model).

Keep us posted as to what your daughter eventually gets for her own piece.
Then she'll have to shop for a "hidden gun" purse if she goes for her plastic.
