While at the gun show in Port Arthur today I overheard a guy from the northwestern area of LA saying that putting a copper BB in the nose of a JHP makes a "devastating" bullet. This guy was in his mid-to late-50s with a rather full beard and probably also sells at many gun shows, in particular those in the Dallas-FTW area. Guess what he was saying equates to a poor man's Cor-Bon Pow-R-Ball. Has anyone ever heard of putting a BB in the nose of a JHP bullet? Any advantage to doing that?

As I understand it, hollow points expand due to the tremendous hydraulic pressures that are created inside the cavity as the bullet plows through the body (which is mostly water).

Closing off the cavity with a BB would be a quite effective way of keeping fluid OUT of the cavity. I think it would work just like a FMJ round, at least until the BB got knocked out of the cavity.

Think about it. If it worked, SOMEBODY would be selling ammunition made that way.

I believe the Corbon ball collapses (or maybe it shatters?) and allows the hollow point to fill with fluid.

I'm afraid it's an Old Wives's Tale. Anything that closes the hollow point of a JHP may cause the bullet to act like a FMJ. CorBon power ball and Hornady critical defense are designed to expand from mechanical forces rather than hydraulic forces. Designing a JHP bullet that will expand reliably is akin to rocket science - - - or, Black Magic - - - the manufacturers don't just put a hole in the nose of a bullet.

Everybody knows that for vampires, you stuff them with garlic!

I had a guy tell me years ago they would put mercury in the tip and cap it with wax.

I don't think I can tell you what we used to put into the cavity of our hollowpoints back in the 60's but it resulted in a totally shredded Houston white pages and they were extemely thick in those days.

Hmmm... I wonder if you can safely get the fulminating material out of pimers or some other source. Now THAT would make a hollowpoint rock-and-roll

BTW I would never dream of altering a bullet in any manner that would be dangerous!

I am especially not going to try and see how much fits in the cavity of a barnes XTP 10mm round this evening either... dangerous dangerous dangerous.

That's true for the pricey stuff but for some of the budget JHP (like the 100 round box at Walmart) I doubt they do much more than put a hole in the nose of the bullet. Best case, they use obsolete designs that might have been optimized for different powders, etc.
