I'm brand new as of this morning....love the site. I did a search and couldn't locate specifics, so forgive me if this is a repost question:
Can any of you recommend a particular location/school to take my CHL?? I'm literally needing "Guns 101" if there is such a course in addition to the class for certification. I live in Lewisville, so the surrounding area (rather than downtown Dallas/Ft. Worth etc.) is preferrable. Thoughts??

Welcome aboard TexasAggie! I'm also in Lewisville and could help with a little 101. This is also what Greybeard does @

For a close place to shoot hand guns I go to the Bass Pro Shop, $8.00 an hour. It's a decent indoor range for week days but way to busy on the weekends.

Thanks guys. I'll need a place that rents guns, being that I don't own one as of yet. Denton County looks like a great place to go once I purchase...close as well.
Looking at a Kimber Ultra Stainless but want to shoot a few to see what I like the best. I also love the looks of the Ruger p345 but some have mentioned the clip release being a problem. Don't plan own owning more than one, nor carrying it everywhere I go. I have this horrific fear of getting thrown in prison for defending my own life...you know the courts these days. I don't trust our own laws regardless of being the victim

Welcome!
Buy a good gun; get your CHL. Taking a basic handgun class is a great idea.
There is no single firearm that is best for every need. I predict once you dive in and become comfortable with safe handling and effective shooting, you'll buy at least one more firearm.

Well, if they become your only choices, it's still better to be in court rather than in a pine box.

It's a bit far for you, but i'd recommend The Bullet Trap; it's where i went, and they took care of EVERY detail of my paperwork.

T Ag -
Welcome to the forum. And thanks, Cosmo, for the .02 in my abscence (' been swamped with hunter ed. "desperados").
Yep,
http://www.dentoncountysports.com pretty much sez what we've got to say. Except that December is typically not a very good month for CHL classes. They interfere with Christmas parties, family time - and hunting!
Ag, ya might want to look hard at the "Home Study + P" page. And, again, unless a real compelling need, don't run out and buy a gun just before class. More than once, I've heard "I sure wish I knew THAT before I spent all the money on THIS."

TexasAggie - Welcome to the forum! We are in Denton county (Roanoke), and we will rent you a gun for the class. It will be a Glock, but you can have your choice of lots of different Glocks!
And, if it makes any difference, we raised 2 Aggies of our own, and taught both of them to shoot.
Our next CHL class is Sat, Dec 2. You can check out our info at

If you go to Bass Pro's range, on the counter are business cards from at least three CHL instructors. Can't vouch for any of them but perhaps the range guys could.
I took mine in Ft Worth; the instructor is an active duty FWPD sergeant. Great class. If you pm me I'll find his email or phone or something.

I took my class at Collin County Gun Range.
it's taught by active duty weapons instructors for the Police Department.
I highly recommend it.
it was a great atmosphere, and the instructors were very knowledgeable, and forthcoming with info, and scenarios.
There's also Quail Creek Gun Range, off of 1171 and 35W. I shoot there most times, and like it pretty well.
buy a bunch of guns. like, loads. handfulls.
one for each room of the house!!!
