Why are the independents/libertarians counted on side of the Democrats when counting for the majority is the House and Senate?
I know this is not totally gun related.

They're not, automatically. They're counted for the side they intend to "caucus" with. In other words, with whom they'll vote for Speaker.
Joe Lieberman ran officially as an I, but in reality he's a D, and got counted as such. Bernie Sanders runs as an I, because it's impolitic to run as a Socialist, although he openly declares that to be his political leaning. But, since he caucuses with the Democrats, he gets lumped in with them for determining control of the House/Senate.
