I don't care for the headline myself but the coverage was great. He was very lucky he wasn't killed before he could defend himself. One point I want to make is that he wasn't very aware of his surroundings. He suddenly felt the gun in the back of his neck. The title was very misleading.
I'm glad it turned out well for him. He certainly was within his right to shoot long before he actually did.

Ditto on the title. I hope that wasn't the headline that accompanied any newspaper story.
To Roger's point, the story said that "Juan" was vacuuming his truck. That's one of those things that, if you do choose to do it in public, you'd better understand that you go into it putting yourself at an awareness disadvantage. Bending down to run the hose over the floor of your car with the vacuum whirring behind you does a pretty good job of removing most of your sensory awareness of the rest of your surroundings. I think back a couple of years ago here in Houston when a female teacher was shot and killed in West University when she stopped to--you guessed it--vacuum her car at a public station.
Another point we might take away is that the story indicated "Juan" didn't generally carry his firearm on him, but kept it in the cab of his pickup. If the scenario had gone down differently, since the carjacker had to look around and under under the dash to get the vehicle started, the odds of his also finding the .38 would probably have been fairly high. Not only is "Juan" unarmed, but now the BG has a new throw-down gun to either use now or keep until his next escapade.
The more media coverage of these types of incidents, the better. The BGs don't fear a threat of incarceration, or someone calling the police after the fact. What they really fear is an armed citizenry. The more air-time incidents like this get, the more the "wolves" know they have to worry about the "sheep."

"Juan" is a fortunate man. I'm sorry he has to know the regret and self-doubt that can come with taking a human life. But I'm glad he was able to win the ultimate fight and is here to offer lessons learned. I'm glad that his case stands out as a text book example of why the private citizen has a right to bear arms, not just in his home, but on the street.
As for the title, it's classic marketing. Even the conservative Fox network resorts to using sex, greed and FUD to sell it's product. And this story is no different. Think about how that headline reads to the average sheep and how they'll react. Even a sheep dog is going to take notice. Had the title read "Man shoots and kills car-jacker, no charges expected" some of us may not have even bothered to watch the video or read the article because the title indicates a reasonable outcome not worther of further consideration. that's why I don't go to the stop and washes much. I feel vulnerable on my street washing my car now. I would take it to Mister Carwash, but I don't want their rail system to scratch my wheels.

As the reporting of this I believe appeared to be 50/50, you could tell with every assumption made and inuendo extended from the media, they wanted this guy "Juan" to somehow incriminate himself someway...
I absolutely believe Juan when he says it was the worst experience in his life...And when he said he'd do it again if the situation presented itself in the same way...

I am always, wherever I go, aware of the fact that I'm carring my gun.
It seams he had forgotten he was armed and he was facing a life and death
situation. I'm quite sure I would have pulled my gun much quicker than he did, but who knows it may have been too soon and I might be dead instead
of sitting here and telling you how brave I would have been.
