Ok , I have been wanting this for a while,,and now that i started thinking about it, well time to buy. First off I have a very nice AR platform in.223,,it is set up mainly for things around 75 yards and under,,green laser, flashlight,holographic sight,,you get the picture,,wanting something that, well, can in a few shots remove the obstruction, so to speak,heavier hitting,308. because ammo ,fairly priced,and good ballistics,,so if anyone has experience in this are,,good ones, bad ones, etc. thanks in advance.

I got a DPMS AR-10 with short hevy barel, not long ago, so I'll defer to the others for reliability. I got mine for pigs, so it's set up to thump them at night under 50 yards.

I will put a nicer long range scope on it when the boy is old enough to shoot a deer.

It gets the job done, but does not seem to be the tack driver I have enjoyed in the past. I can keep them on a pie plate, but can't keep them in the 10 ring. I know this is due to low power optic.

I have two DPMS .308 rifles and like them both. Accuracy is very good out of both rifles. CJATE how many rounds do you have out of your rifle? Minimum of 200 rounds to get these rifles broke in, with good cleaning of bbl with bore solvent and wire brush about every ten rds for max accuracy.

I have an Armalite AR-10 in .308 that I've put hundreds of rounds through.
I can shoot it all day and I have yet to have a miss-feed.
It groups under 1" at 100 yards

I'm going to go out on limb and guess that in .308, barrel lengths in the 18"-22" range would be optimum. Shorter than 18", and the velocity drop off probably isn't worth it. Longer than 22", and the rifle's weight gets unwieldy. 1:12 twists will do well for lighter bullets, while 1:10 twists will handle heavier bullets better. Springfield M1As ship with a 1:11 twist....or at least mine did....and it seems to like 165-168 grain bullets best.

I don't know enough to recommend a .308 upper. I have a very accurate mongrel dog .223/5.56 carbine built out of a DPMS lower and parts kit, a "GI" upper of unknown manufacture, and a cheap Model One 16.5" HBAR. I won't say that you can't do better, but to do so you'd be entering the region of diminishing returns.

I suspect that building your own AR in .308 could be much like that. You could have a pretty nice and accurate "field grade" rifle for a reasonable investment; or you could spend twice as much for 10% more rifle.

Own a DPMS Sass rifle in 308. Has a 18 inch barrel. Love it Has ZERO issues. I would show u a pic but I just get frustrated because I can vever get them to work.

You folks are lucky, I would love an AR platform .308 but the prices...Sheeesh! my wife would murder me if I spent that much lol. Oh well just keep on wishing.

I have a DPMS AR10 with the heavy stainless steel barrel and I also have a M1A SOCOM with a VLTOR stock and rail system. I think it all comes down to what you want it for. My AR10 is a sit and wait rifle. I would never want to have to carry it around for any extended period of time it's more of a sit and wait type rifle. Even the M1a is heavy but still better than the AR10.

So if you're going to be doing a run and gun type of hunt you need something light. If you're going to sit in a stand and want to make long shots you can go for the bull barreled AR10. Fortunately with the AR types you can switch out between the two. Reliability is there and as with any AR platform the sky is the limit when it comes to mods. I love the M1A of course, it was the first rifle I ever bought, but as far as only have one magazine fed .308 the AR really is the way to go.
