I'm going to tour all of the Western States. 4 states do not honor Texas CHL
I will be gone 3 weeks. Thus far I have always been able to carry and I'm
not use to leaving my pistol at home. What would you do , leave it or take it.

Tote it! Yeah, sorry, couldn't resist.

I would take it. Even in the states we don't have reciprocity with, you should still be OK with it locked in the trunk. I would do a quick check on those states just to make sure, though.

You could separate the ammo from the gun and lock the gun up somewhere. It shouldn't be a problem then. I would just hide it and not worry. Just don't do anything to cause them to pull you over.

I have occasion to drive to CA to visit family.

Having to stop on the AZ side of the border to get out of the truck, unholster, unload and lock up is a very powerful reminder of why we have to continue to fight for our RKBA.

We can not take anything for granted.

Tote, study the traveling laws in all the states that are a part of your trip. Print out applicable portions of the law to have with you as a refresher. Each state is different.

My vote is for taking it with you.....better in the trunk while driving than leaving it at home. A bump in the night is much louder if only armed with a frying pan

Here in texas we can get our information on chl laws. Iguss that the same thing would apply in other states that honor tx. chl.

Best advice is study the applicable laws of the states to which you will travel. You can also consult the states' Attorneys General for more info.

FWIW, The PRK is revered by the Brady Bunch for having some of the most restrictive laws in the land. In general, there are no peaceable journey clauses and they don't recognize any permits other than their own. Bringing a gun into the state can be hazardous since it can be argued you are "importing" an unregistered and unapproved firearm. I won't tell you not to carry your gun but I will tell you to tread carefully if you do.

Personally, I don't feel bound by the gun. I am willing to leave them at home and look for other options when visiting NPEs, non-permissive environments, like the PRK, Hawaii, New Jersey, DC, Chicago and other such places. Knives, for instance, are coming under increasing scrutiny but can still be carried with minimal fuss in most places. I like the way knives work on people, both pysically and psychologically.

I also carry unconventional items like flashlights, and many other less obvious weapons. For instance, John Farnam gave me the idea of developing a limp while traveling and carrying the Cold Steel City Stick for a cane.

I've only once has an airport or other security person ask about the City Stick. I purposely "limped" back a couple steps at a major airport's security screen to pull off my best Al Sharpton/Jesse Jackson impression (It's pretty bad actually). I made a bit of scene complaining that the screener was discriminating against a crippled, black-man...They couldn't give me the City Stick back fast enough! My wife on the other hand, headed for the airline gate as if she didn't know me.

:D

Thats smart.

Good for you!

I prefer the "cane" over a walking stick, because it looks less "weapon like", and the "hook" is very useful. No one has ever questioned my having it, even though it is clearly a combat cane with grooves cut in it and a beveled hook. A "walking stick" ;-) runs a close second though.

The airlines are particularly accommodating of anyone they think has an injury or disability.

A cane/stick can be a devastating weapon with only a small amount of training (more is better of course).

In fact, that might be a good seminar to put on after our edged weapons.

Always good to have options!

My Dad has made some road trips following his grandaughter's rodeo events...

I always tell him to go to this website that has a good databse of "state" info regarding the traveling and storage requirements for firearms...

Keep all the states info on where you think you're going in a folder and keep it handy...

And when you come across a state that restricts, just pull over, keep the ammo and firearm separate and locked up, and I just don't see how anyone could gig you for that...

And breath a sigh of relief when you get out of there...

Shusshhhh!!!!!!!!!!!! :nono:

I've taken mine to Kommiefornia...... Shussshhhh!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! :nono:

I planned on committing no crime, including driving past the posted speed limit.

When I arrived at my destination, the gun was relocated and locked in a locking compartment, just incase I missed a hidden stop sign or worse... one of theirs hit me!

When we left my daughter's house, I once again placed the weapon within my reach and drove safely home. Shusssshhhh!!!!!!!!! :nono:

Now, she's moved to Colorado, A very big improvement, I'm legal all the way there and back. :patriot:
