Handgun rust

I did a search and I found viewtopic.php?f=23&t=36702&p=436579" onclick="window.open(this.href);return false; (Prevent Rust from Carry, Rather than Storage)

My situation is:

I bought a blued Sig Sauer handgun a few months ago. I haven't carried it much yet, but I've put a few hundred rounds through it. Like my other Sig handgun, the blued finish on the top of the barrel (the squarish part that is visible in the slide where the bullet ejects) came off pretty quickly due to rubbing against the slide. But unlike my other Sig handgun, it's starting to show tiny rust dots.

Comments? Is this normal or not?

Thanks in advance :tiphat:

keep it clean and shoot it often. Normal wear and tear.

I hope you find your answer. I had a two-tone Sig 226 a few years ago and it would get spots of rust under oil. Hard to swallow for what was almost a thousand dollar handgun.

ive read this sometimes happens. I thought the slides were stainless steel with a nitron coating depending on what model you have? Try hitting it with a stiff nylon brush to knock off the rust and apply some CLP. Do you wipe down the firearm weekly? I dont own any sigs but i have been researching them becuase i would like to get one and this is just stuff i have found while researching.

I dont wipe down any of mine weekly, but I do clean and lube after every range visit, my most recent purchase had some very light rust on the feed ramp which I am sure is from neglect,

do you normally clean / oil after use? or let it sit for awhile dry?

You can also easily reblue worn areas with a cold blue solution available through Brownell's. It will help retard (although not fully prevent) rusting.

There are also specially designed coatings for the purpose of preventing rust.

Also if your handgun has removable grips, remove them every so often and check for rust underneath, especially during summer months when you're sweating more.

Good advice.

This is a prime location for applying the rust preventive coating mentioned below.

:iagree: I have also found that the grip screws themselves are prone to rust.

I haven't found a product that successfully prevents rust on grip screws in a warm climate. I gave up trying and replaced the blued originals with stainless steel ones.
