Well, now we know how to paralyze London: sprinkle a few boxes of .22 ammo around the city.

Bullet found in doorway

LIVE ammunition has been found lying in the doorway of a busy high street shop.

The .22 calibre short round bullet was found at the entrance of the 99p Stores in Walthamstow High Street on Wednesday morning, November 1.

Haroon Khan, who has a firearms licence and is a member of a local gun club, was alarmed to discover live ammunition in a Walthamstow doorway.

The bullet, of Swiss origin, was still in its brass casing, complete with enough gunpowder for it to fire itself.
continued...

Mr Khan said that if it had been struck hard enough or exposed to heat it could have gone off.

"This sort of thing should not be lying around. It was live, primed and active," he said. "But rather me pick it up than a little kid.

"How can you feel safe when you are finding things like this on the street?

"To get hold of one of these is not easy. You have to go through a scrutinised search, you need a licence and you have to belong to a club."

Ammunition of this kind would ordinarily be used in a small handgun or pistol, and both can be owned legally under licence.

But to leave strictly controlled goods out in the street would be enough for a firearms licence to be revoked.

The bullet has been examined at a Metropolitan Police laboratory and details about it kept for future reference.

A police spokesman said: "Recovering firearms and ammunition is a priority for the police. We take the same view of ammunition as we do of a gun.

"If it goes bang, it is still lethal."

Police are treating the unattended ammunition as a crime. Mr Khan alerted them at 10.16am, and they arrived at his shop to pick up the bullet at 11.32am.

Where can I get some of that self-firing ammo?

gee, in light of this response, I suppose my wife's reaction to vacuuming up a .22LR was "understated".
well, she got a new vacuum out of the deal...

I'm pretty sure I've cleaned out from under my truck seat and thrown away enough ammo to force all of the UK to surrender.

You did what!!!!!!!

Good grief Kevin........you could have gotten us all killed.

And what was my mother thinking when she allowed me as a 10 yr. old to walk down to the river with my .22 rifle and all that "self firing" ammo. I'm starting to think she didn't love me.

Sure hope I don't ever run into a .22 "short". EEEEEEEEK!

Sheeeesh, we are truly doomed.

Based on this criteria I have enough powder and primers lost in my carpet to wipe out half of Europe.

I wonder how much time that round will get on the Isle of Wight prison???

It may have to be kept under special guard for the duration...

I think we need to hear from Rebecca Peters (IANSA) on this...I can't wait!

/sarcasm

Idiot's are easily scared!!!!

The awful part of this story is not that a cartridge was found on the floor, but that there was so much hand-wringing hooey made of the situation. Why not just pick it up and move on with your life?

I noticed that the story mentioned that even a single .22 Short is highly restricted by the government. I understand that England is trying to ban the carry of knives now.

Sad state of affairs, especially since I will be in England for a few days next spring. I suppose I will only be able to eat a bag of fish-n-chips, since no utensils are needed.

I had no idea shorts were so dangerous. What about other .22s? Do I need to get a .22 disposal team to take care of the boxes of .22LR in my closet? Will they fire spontaneously?

My wife took some of my "tac" pants to the Dry Cleaners once and a shotgun SHELL fell out and rolled across the floor.

Other times loose ammo has fallen out.

Those crazy Brits!
