Protecting Neighbors Property

First a short history. The house next door had been empty for almost a year. A couple bought it and have been working on bringing it back to livablecondition. Last week he came to our door (we had met them before) and asked if we had seen anyone at his house the night before. I had to say no since we were out of town. Seems someone had broken in and stolen about 6000.00 worth of tools. We exchanged phone numbers just in case.

Moving ahead to last night, my wife was leaving to go to a church function. Shee calls me and says someone is next door. I grabed my weapon and a jacket, putting the weapon in the inner pocket and went outside. 2 men were comming from the back yard (even though the gate was locked). I asked if I could help them and they said they were measuring the roof. I looked and saw no tape measure or measure wheel so I said withou a ruler. One thenwent to the truck and grabbed a tape measure. I then called the owner to see if he had expected anyone which he had not. Then called 911. They heard me talking to the dispatcher and started to eave. I used my phone and got several pictures of them, truck and license plate.
Told all of this to LEO when they arrived (6 of them) and they started asking discriptions. I asked if pics would help and you should have seen the look on his face. Showed him the pics, emailed to him and they caught the guys 2 streets over at another vacant house.

LEO satrted asking what I was carrying and we had a nice chat on guns and protecting neighbors property. We also kidded about how they were treating the rookie that was with them but thats another story.

Throw the book at them, and maybe a wrench or two.

That is Great! I miss living in Irving. I had several neighbors on my street that were "Aware" of who belonged and who didn't. We all looked out for each other! Now I moved to a "nicer neighborhood", and have only met 3 neighbors in 2 years! :nono:

The thing about the "nicer neighborhoods" is they are nicer and have nicer things for the crooks to take. I live in one of those areas also. I have had 3 attempts on my house a few vehicles on blocks etc.... Funny thing is when the vehicles were on blocks the crooks walked right past my Benz to unscrew my bulb so they could take the tire off my neighbors new truck. He installed better lighting after that and started to use it. Simple things like outside lights, locked doors, curtains, a dog, make it a less desirable target.

Awesome! Good shooting. The pix, I mean.

Wish you lived in my neighborhood when my house was burgled before I moved into it. Lost a brand new stove, answering machine, compressor, etc. Never saw them again. No one got pictures, and even tho one of the burglars apparently opened the fridge and move stuff around, no fingerprints. Hmmph.

Wondered how hard the cops actually worked on it, but found out they did apparently quiz all the neighbors. The next time I came to check up on the place, guy across the road who I hadn't met yet came buzzing right over to see who was there. He said the cops had been by, and when he saw a car pull up to my house, thought it might be the burglars coming back for more.

Looks like a great way to make a friend of the new neighbor! :cheers2:

I got home last night and the neighbors were installing motion sensing lights and video cameras. He told me that he was aiming one of the cameras toward the front of my house just in case.

I guess he is paying it forward, but yes, I think we have some good neighbors now.

Well done...

I recently discovered how my neigbors feel about my gun ownership. When it was discovered that a sex offender (for a solicitation offense two decades ago) had moved into our neighborhood, the neighbor's wife (our local activist) wanted to make sure that everyone else in the HOA knew. When she called the house to tell the b'loved, she commented, "And I've already told the kids which house to run to if were not home and they ever need help--yours!"

I would like to think that I would have the presence of mind that you demonstrated if called upon to defend my neighbors house, home or family...

Kudos to you!

Nice work!

Until last year I had a neighbor who hated guns. After Ike when we had no power for almost 2 weeks I open carried while cleaning up and peforming repairs, I offered to help him cut up a fallen tree, he refused because I was carrying (so my work went faster at my house). He walked on the house early last year and it was taken over by Fanny Mae, I was interested in buying it for my mother in law but backed out when I saw it, no doors anywhere, no ceiling in 2 rooms, no flooring in any room, most fixtures missing and the ones that remained would have to be replaced, basically a full interior rebuild job. And this is in a nice quiet neighborhood. Fortunately all my other neighbors are wonderful and we all have verbal agreements to protect each others property, I have high hopes that the new owners will be the same (someone bought it recently and has been working on it but I haven't been able to meet them).
