Any one use(d) it?

I lost one of my Pups today from a rattlesnake bite. This one was a full sized snake.. two weeks ago the pups cornered a baby rattler. .. with the weather changing, we will see more I think.

Want to leave my wife a few options to get after a snake while I'm gone.. Trusty hoe is standing by for duty.. But thinking loading one of my camping guns (Taurus MDL 66 .357 ) with CCI Shot Shell ammo..http://www.cci-ammunition.com/products/ ... oadNo=3738" onclick="window.open(this.href);return false;

Anyone used this? patterned it? shot a snake with it?

spreads out a lot in a rifled barrel
Shot patterns/tests/reviews are online, I forget where..
Close range only I think 8-15 feet.
I have had it in 9mm .40 .45 .38/357 ... haven't fired it but saw online shot patterns, and you tube videos.
May or may not cycle to load a second round in an auto.
I put it as a first round in an auto, or all 5-6 in a revolver (with a second 9mm full of JHP for non-snakes) when I go through snaky grass with my kayak.

From reviews/videos I saw, it isn't a round to use at 21 feet away, but if you are close enough it's ok, howver, if a snake is by your foot ... wear kevlar socks so you still have as many toes and 2 feet later ... it spreads out a lot fast

I've patterned them out of a snub-nose revolver and they're devastating against small targets at relatively close range (think I was about 7 yards away) - the little shot shredded a few used cardboard ammo boxes and left a healthy divot in the caliche underneath. Certainly will do a good job on snakes and other small critters if aim is at least in the general vicinity.

I carry a Ruger Security Six with 38 CCI Snake shot while cutting grass this time of year. I have unloaded an entire wheel while cutting grass around the pond on mocassins. When sitting out and feeding the fish I keep a 12ga with me and shoot them that way. But the 38 snake shot worked pretty good up to about 7 yards.

38 Snubby with snake shot works great. I only shot once at anything other than paper, and it did the job. I have the same brand shells for my .40 and they do not cycle well in my Glock.

At seven yards, that really surprises me, but thanks for the report. Is there any particular brand that you prefer?

CCI shotshells have worked well for me at close range (<10 ft) againts snakes and rats. They don't however cycle either of my Glocks (26 or 34). Good practice for the click-tap-rack though ;-)

When out at the land, I carry with 1 in the chamber, 2 more in the mag, followed by regular ammo.

Id rather not have to remember what ammo is loaded people ammo or Snake ammo... so for me, the better option is a second gun. For now that is the MDL 66. I'll pick up a 38spc or 357 snubby soon enough.

You can get your dogs vaccinated against rattlesnake bites. I read a flier at my vets last year and got my black lab vaccinated as she and I hike regularly in rattlesnake country during the summer. You do it before the expected exposure and it lasts 6 months; that's about the length of a "season" for snakes. Now all that is needed is a vaccine against hedgehogs.

Very interesting. Too bad they don't have it for people.

I live in a neighborhood with kids, dogs, cats, etc... and wanted to find something safe to shoot snakes with as we have a water moccasin problem. This is the best solution I could find. It's a Gamo air shotgun/rifle in 22 cal. In shotgun mode it is devastating on snakes!!! And Safe around kids and dogs, etc.... Paid about $100.00 bucks for it several months ago.

My wife has a Taurus Judge (.45/.410) that she carries when in pasture on our other place. The .410 doesn't recoil "too" much and can be deadly on some rattlesnakes we've found there. With the wheel gun...just point and BANG! LOL! :fire

I have a Single Six 22 mag that I carry the CCI shot shells in as well as an Iver Johnson 44 mag with shot shells. I've killed many snakes with both. I agree they're not for anything much over 8-10 yds but I can't ever remember trying to kill a snake that I wasn't closer than that to anyway. The 44 mag will perforate em from head to rattler then it's DRT.
