Good morning All!!

New to the forum and CHL, i took the class last week and mailed my app yesterday.
My FP appointment is today...

Looking forward to meeting some like minded individuals on the board...

And Here goes my first question:
I've always been partial to my 9mm, but all of the higher cal talk has me thinking.
what do you guys/gals think is the percentage of people that carry bigger cals?

i know this is a complicated question and there is no clear "right or wrong" answer to this but i dont know any other people here in TX that carry.

I wouldn't worry about caliber so much if military/police groups around the world used 9mm too ..

Carry what you can control and get a second shot quickly with if you need to.

They all throw a piece of lead faster than I can throw a rock

I'd avoid anything smaller than .380/9mm if possible.

40/45 are good, if you can control them

Placement matters.

Thanks! i am very comfortable with my 9mm and im registered for some additional training...
My M&P is great, however what i purchased for carry (when i get my license) is a P250 sub, and, with the full trigger pull i find it quite hard to get the second shot out quickly and on target, i think im going to look into a kimber solo..

As stated above, this is a very good and knowledgable group. I read quite a bit here and learn a lot.

Your question is a good one.

I took the advice of someone wiser than me on this group and took advantage of renting a few pistols of differing calibers before deciding on my preferred carry weapon. (.45 ACP if you'd like to know).

Gun Tests Magazine (you won't be able to see this article unless you have a subscription) compared the Kimber Solo to the Kahr CW9, and they preferred the Kahr. Here is what they said about the Kimber:

All in all, we liked the Solo, but we wonder about the extraordinary force needed to chamber a round or lock the slide back. As noted, we think Kimber needs to bevel or round the front edges of the magazines to prevent cutting the fingers.

Here is what they said about the Kahr:

We think more shooters will be comfortable with the Kahr than the Solo. Although it’s larger and perhaps not in the same exact category, the Kahr is easier to shoot, easier on the hand and pocketbook, and seems to be reliable. We are starting to think some guns are just too small, but we haven’t tried them all yet. A bit of roughness that we felt in the Kahr’s slide movement was somewhat abated by the end of our shooting. We suspect the Kahr will find lots of buyers, especially among those who lack the strength to force the Solo’s slide back by hand.

I have held the Kahr CW9 in my hand, and it is a truly small pistol, so the Kimber must be bordering on microscopic. Before going any further, let me state that my posting record here puts me in the ranks of the Kimber fanboys; but I think that the attractiveness aside, perhaps Kimber needs to sort this one out a little bit better. But in fairness to the Solo, I've never had one in my hands to try and cycle the slide.

Anyway, I'm a .45 ACP man at heart (and one of my carry pistols is a full-sized M&P 45, the M&Ps are great carry guns), but I've been looking for a small single stack 9mm to add to my carry rotation, and I've considered both the Kimber and the Kahr. Between my son, his fiancé, and myself, we have three Kimbers in the safe. They are wonderfully made pistols. But I have to say that given what I've seen so far, I'm leaning toward a Kahr. The Solo is a beautiful jewel of a pistol, but good looks won't get the job done if you ever have to do the unthinkable and defend yourself with a gun. I want it to be better than the Kahr, but I'm not convinced that it is.

Anyway, welcome to the forum, and these are just a few random thoughts.

By the way, get yourself a subscription to Gun Tests magazine if you don't already have one. They are the only (so far as I know) gun magazine that A) does not accept any advertising from any of the manufacturers; and B) goes out and buys the guns they are going to test from local retailers instead of accepting test models from the manufacturers. Thus, their comparisons and conclusions are untainted by the manufacturers, and they pull no punches.

Welcome to the forum rqFLSTFB.

My wife carries the Kahr CW9 that TAM mentioned above. It is great to shoot, it is easy enough for my wife to load and operate and is of small enough size for her to carry in her purse. I enjoy shooting that pistol as well.

I carry a Taurus PT145 (.45ACP) IWB because I like the 10 round double-stack magazine, the proven .45ACP round and it's what I have the holster to carry.

TAM, if you want to try a CW9, you can try hers sometime.

I agree with the solo being very easy on the eye, i love the way that pistol looks but functionality and reliability always comes first for me. that's one of the reasons i went with the P250. i will look into the Kahr, im going to swing by my local store today to pickup a holster for my M&P, i have my first class on wed night.
I've been shooting for about 2 years but after my CHL class it became apparent to me that more training is needed.

One more question, what in the hell is this famous wally walk everyone is talking about here? do i have to do it to be in the "In Crowd"? :D

You're certainly welcome. The "Wally Walk" is a time honored tradition that has been around for the past few years in which the applicant for either a Man Card or a Woman Card, after having received their plastic benediction from the state, hie's themselves off to the local Walmart while carrying. When there, certain maneuvers have to be performed, such as reaching for items off a top shelf and stooping to get items off the bottom shelf—while not printing or exposing your gun—and brandishing a fresh banana like a gun. Extra points are awarded for purchasing an order of nachos or fries and a Coke/DP. Results are not considered valid until A) they are reported here; and B) they are photographically documented.

If you are considering a small 9mm single stack and looking at Kahr, you might want to have a look at the Springfield EMP in 9mm. I have one and it is an amazing, small 1911 in 9mm.
