Curious... I like shopping, and rarely get to San Antonio, so I'd like to hit some of the better gun shops in my down time.

Any suggestions welcome. They can be a *must see* because either 1) good prices or 2) good selection or even better BOTH. ;)

In particular, shops that focus on Tactical weaponry & supply (AR's, etc), and any with a wide variety of hand guns.

Nagel's on San Pedro is the largest I know of, and has been in business for decades. It not only has a lot of guns on display, the front section has beaucoup knives as well. Be sure you make your way to the back right corner of the store -- that is where the used guns are, and there are often some interesting things there, including old revolvers and such. I was in there a couple weeks ago and the salesman pointed out an interesting small revolver with integrated knife/bayonet. I have no idea of the age, but I am guessin pre-WWII, maybe pre-WWI. They also have a lot of reloading stuff on hand, several safes, lots of hunting and other clothing. Hope you are skinny because it is crowded in there.

I haven't been to Jerry's Texas Guns on Bandera in a long time, but in the past he had a big selection of new and used firearms, holster, safes, and a lot of other stuff. Not as big as Nagel's, but pretty good. Last time I looked he also had his own shooting range next door, called Texas Thunder. When I was hitting his store regularly, his prices were often toward the higher end, but he always gave good service and had a lot of stuff on hand.

Dury's on I-37 and Hot Wells also has a bunch of guns, especially handguns, and does discounts for military and LEO (I think firefighters too, but not sure on this). They often have police trade-in Glocks as they seem to do a lot of business with cops. L ifetime warranty on all guns, new or used.

There are others in San Antonio, but I think these three stand out.

The Buckhorn Museum and Saloon on Houston street downtown doesn't sell guns, but they have a lot of interesting historical guns from both Texas Ranger history and more generally. They have an amazing amount of stuffed animals too, I am talking in on the order of couple hundred? more? in various rooms according to geographical origin. Kinda pricey for a tour, but worth at least on visit some time in your life, and discounts for military. Plus you can buy a beverage, adult or otherwise, at the bar, and take it with you as you peruse.

Unfortunately none of these places are close to each other.

I'm driving from Houston too... it's not worth flying and it's easier to carry. (not having to check a gun, etc.) I love intra-state travel.

I would second both of those stores, but with a caveat. Nagel's has a somewhat mixed reputation for customer service and prices. I have bought guns there in the past, and had days where I walked out because of the salespeople. I have been doing business with Dury's since 1987 and always had good luck with them. But, carrying a badge might have helped a little. He does get quite a bit of police business and caters to them a lot.

Gotta mention the Powderhorn on 410 between 90 and Military. Great group of people running that shop. Great selection and fair prices.

Jerry's place (Texas Guns) on Bandera Rd is nice, but expensive. Expect to pay $600 or so for a new Glock.

I like Don's Guns on 410 and Fredericksburg, but selection is small. What they do have though is reasonably priced. Brother in law picked up an XD .40 about a year ago for $459 NIB.

+1 on Nagles and Drury's. Nagles has so much stuff crammed into thier store you will feel like a kid in a candy store lol

-1 on Jerry's gunshop, actually I think it is called Texas guns or something like that. Went in their about 6 months ago with cash in hand itching to be spent. Me and one other customer where in the store. I waited patiently for over 20 min, listening to them shoot the bull about guns, barrels, life in general. The other guy wasnt buying anything, that were just chatting. I was never acknowledged, never asked if I needed anything, never told "I'll be right with you".... I was an invisible man to them. Evidently, they didnt see me when I got fed up and left either lol..

NO gun shops in San Antonio have good prices compared to buying online, or gun shows. Nagles is full of stuff to look at, but they will be hundreds of dollars higher than say, Academy, which is about the cheapest place to buy a handgun outside of online, or some dealers at the monthly Saxet gun show in San Antonio.

You might find the occasional deal on a used firearm at some of the dealers, but new ones are high, high, high.

On the Riverwalk now instead. Oh well. There are worse problems to have.

Nagel's does tend to be wayyyyyy over priced. $50 for a knife that was 12 shipped on amazon, and they tend towards MSRP for guns, which is usually high, but it is fun to go and check out.
