Leatherman MUT® multi-tool....

Both my son and I both have a love affair with the AR15 platform, and he gave me an interesting gift for Father's Day—one which would be useful to almost anybody who owns an AR platform rifle/carbine/pistol. It is the MUT® multi-tool made by Leatherman. This is a tool designed specifically for the maintenance needs of almost any AR15/M16 platform rifle. It comes in a MOLLE sheath which can be adapted for belt wear.

It comes with the following tools on it:
  • needle nose pliers;
  • regular pliers;
  • replaceable wire/hard wire cutters;
  • stranded wire cutters;
  • crimpers;
  • knife blade;
  • saw blade;
  • replaceable firearm disassembly punch;
  • cleaning rod/brush adapter;
  • replaceable bronze carbon scraper;
  • large (reversible flat/phillips) bit driver;
  • hammer;
  • cutting hook;
  • bolt override tool;
  • carabiner/bottle opener;
  • a separate 1/2" 3/8" scope adjustment box end wrench which fits in a sleeve on the carrying case.
More information can be found about this tool here: http://www.leatherman.com/product/MUT

The knife and saw blades and the carbon scraper are shaped to make one-handed opening easier, and the knife blade locks open. The fold out disassembly punch has a female end which threads onto a pivoting mounting point. When the punch has been removed by unthreading it from the mount, the female end of most cleaning rods or brushes can be threaded onto the mount. Also, there is a threaded hole on one of the handles which will accept the male threaded end of a cleaning rod. Also included are a longer/larger flat/phillips bit for the bit driver, and another bit with a hex head on one end and a torx head on the other.

Anyway, my only previous experience with a Leatherman tool was with one of the tiny pocket versions that somebody gave me many years ago, which you used to see for sale as kind of a "loss-leader" near the checkout lines at places like Home Depot. This is my first full-sized Leatherman tool, and I am pretty impressed with its quality of manufacture. I have no personal knowledge of this, but it would seem like the Leatherman MUT would be pretty popular with riflemen in the field with any branch of the military services.

I also own an Otis cleaning kit which zips up into a small round nylon case and which has rapidly become my favorite cleaning kit for use with my rifles. My new Leatherman MUT is going to join my Otis kit as part of my "on the go" essentials for range trips; and I'm going to pick up a spare of both the cleaning kit and the MUT for inclusion in my bug out bag.

Anyway, I just wanted to share this thing with you all, particularly those of you who, like me, are AR nuts. I just now looked up what people are charging for this thing. :shock: I guess my son loves his daddy! But I have to say that, considering everything it contains and its build quality, I certainly think it is worth the price. I'm looking forward to many years of enjoying its usefulness.

you do realise that LEATHERMAN refused to fill orders for our military since they are ant-war and pacifists?

Since several of their products have National Stock Numbers, I believe your information is in error.

Do you have a reliable source for that information?

I'm sorry, I should have clarified my remarks. When the Iraqi war started they refused to fill the orders directly, but allowed their suppliers to fill the orders, since they personally were against the war. Sorry for the confusion. I prefer to use Gerber which supports our military.

Again, can you provide a source for that fact? Or was this just hearsay?

For the record, I like and use Leatherman products.

It's possible that all the anti gun, anti military, and so forth came from Tim Leatherman's
endorsement of Senator Kerry in his presidential bid.

Leatherman answers in this letter.

I'm not one to jump on the "BAN IT" bandwagon but he seems to play the victim rather well. Besides I own a Gerber. :mrgreen:

Back on topic, I have seen the MUT before and it looks like a fine tool. I'd definitely consider one for when I finally acquire an AR.
