I just read on the DPS website http://www.txdps.state.tx.us/administra ... sindex.htm" onclick="window.open(this.href);return false; that as of March 11, 2011 they will only accept electronic fingerprinting. What about people from say, Louisiana or Mississippi who apply for an out of state resident permit? Do they have to drive all the way to Texas to have electronic prints done there? (the website indicates very few states have that system)

Personally I'm OK, I got my CHL renewed over a year ago and changed my address changed to Louisiana way back when. But I recommended to some people to go ahead and get Texas CHLs as well as Louisiana to have the benefit of reciprocity with more states.

The class must be taken in Texas. I believe that has been the case since the inception of the CHL program. Therefore, one practical solution is to schedule the fingerprints during the same trip as the class.

Or take your class from someone who also does fingerprints. Then you can still get it done all in one trip.

Oh you can't take a class in another state and send the certificate to Texas? (like Florida) I didn't know that. Nevermind then.

Florida, and maybe other states, require that the fingerprints be done by a Law Enforcement Agency (per Crossfire). Photoshop and a computer can do lots of mischef. Maybe thats the reason for a LE Agency to do and sign off on the prints. Makes sense to me.

My Texas renewal and Utah out of state permit requirements were filled by a single class from Crossfire. Great class, informative, and good folks running the program.

If you carry a weapon into their training area thats located in a Mall, and declare the pistol as requested by Cabellas's Mall signage, the Mall Security will refuse you admittance. There is no 30.06 signage posted. Just don't follow Cabellas request to declare. A request for store security to verify that unloaded guns are brought into the premises for repair or sale makes sense. If you do declare that you are a CHL holder and 'carrying', you will be instructed to take 'it' back to your auto. You are welcome though.

Some places, Bass Pro for example, you might be requested to declare. If so, you show your CHL to the folks behing the counter, and welcomed into the store.

I guess the lesson, if there is one, is to ignore polite requests and pay attention to the correct signage that pretains to CHL holders only.

It's a shame Texas isn't more gun friendly but the fingerprint rule is consistent with the Texas-only policies for classes that's been the rule for 15 years.

I know of at least one (and there must be more) school that uses L1. That's where I am taking my class!
