Hello all I was wondering if anyone knew where I could find out how many acres one must own to legally shoot a firearm in the State of Texas? I realize common sense must come into place but I would like to know the legal limits. I am currently looking to purchase some land to go shooting on and didnt want to buy less than the law requires.

It depends. Is the land inside city limits? What do municipal and county laws say?

Counties are preempted from prohibiting shooting on tracts exceeding 10 acres (Local Government Code 235.022) but they are not required to regulate shooting on smaller tracts. So it could be legal on 2ac in one county and illegal on the same size lot in a neighboring county. I think preemption kicks in at 50 acres inside city limits but IANAL.

While Harris County prohibits discharge of firearms within the county, there is a law that allows you to shoot on your own land if it's over a certain size. We hunt on our land, which is south of Tomball. Someone called the sheriff to report gunshots and once the deputy realized we were within our rights, he asked if he could come out and hunt some time on our land. We also shoot trap on our property, inside the county.

regardless of the size restriction I would suggest checking with local authorities to insure you are legal.
