I presently have a Glock 27 loaded with 165gr Hornaday Critical Defense ammo.

Any suggestions about this load and/or a better one for this gun? Any input will be appreciated.

I would suggest that you can safely use any modern expanding bullet from a quality manufacturer that works in your gun. I know its not much help, but thats the best advice I can give.

Great thread!! Great info!! So it looks like the Winchester Ammo is best all around. The Win PDX ammo for it penetration and expansion and the
WWB Hp for it's good performance and cost.

I am heading to Cabellas tomorrow and will be looking for ammo. I will specifically look for the Win PDX. I guess my Hornaday Critical Defense ammo,
which is not cheap, may not be the best for use in a CCW.

Here's another ammo test site. For most of the .40 tests, it seems they used a G27. Also, if you don't see what you are looking for, check the "old website", its probably listed there.

I agree with Heath that any of the well reputed brands will do the job. I've tried a number of different brands of .38 and 9mm HP and didn't see much of a difference with them, meaning that they were all quite good.

A-R, nice comparison in the old thread. During my own 9mm testing (just quick, short-range target shooting, no expansion tests) I shot the Winchester the most accurately, so it is nice to see that it expands that well. They do tend to be a bit more expensive than some of the others, but I think the extra $5 per box is worth if since it shoots well for me.

Notice the Hornady TAP I tested was 180-grain, so your 165-grain might perform differently. Also while this is a decent amateur representation of what particular bullets will do when fired from particular barrel lengths it is by no means definitive. What these bullets will do to stop a human being is anyone's guess.

And remember that even two different copies of same gun can have differences in ammo performance (though with only 3.5-inches of barrel any difference will likely be minor and related more to absolute accuracy). So be sure to test the ammo in YOUR particular gun for both function (does it cycle the action properly? Or does it jam?) and accuracy ... though with Glock, it's a good bet it will work fine.

Lastly if you do go with PDX, be sure to check prices at Wal Mart and Academy, which both stock it and may be cheaper than Cabelas.

After carrying my 27 for 4 years and several different grains of bullets I can see no reason not to carry 165-180 grain jhp bullet. Over penetration is something that any handgun can do. I would be more concerned with under penetration. Other then that just make sure its quality American made ammo and it functions in your gun. Hornady, Federal, Speer, Winchester, Remington etc are all good options. I just usually buy whatever 180 grain jhp that is cheapest at Wal-Mart or from cheaper then dirt. I buy at least 100 rounds of whatever I am carrying at the time and run at least 50 rounds through it to make sure it runs ok.

180gr Remington Goldensaber JHP, I wouldn't use anything else. Every other Friday when I go to the range my first shots come straight from the magazine that has been sitting in my weapon for the last two weeks, I draw fast, and shoot fast. Fantastic accuracy, and the recoil is very controllable, and I have never had any failures with that ammunition.

I only use goldensaber for all self defense purposes, except in my 10mms.

My 27 gets 165 gr T-Series Rangers or 180 gr Federal HST. I did some water jug tests of the two and the HST's did really well and the T-Series looked amazing. Going to test a few more varieties on the next trip to the ranch.

Winchester 180 grain bonded is what I am carrying right now also in my 27. Most of it that is for sale on the internet is surplus federal agency ammo. It is good stuff! I like the Golden sabers in my Glock 20 10mm but they shed the jacket every time unless they are the bonded golden sabers. In fact most of the hot 10mm rounds will shed there jacket or fragment in the 135-180 grain range unless they are bonded, Barnes copper or hornady xtp. Once you start pushing the bullets over 1300fps they start to fragment or shed their jacket in 10mm.

I just picked up 4 boxes of Winchester 165 gr. Supreme Elite Elite PDX1 bonded ammo. Tests showed it to be really good load.
I am going to the range tomorrow and fire a box from my Glock 27. I sure it will work just fine. My Glock eats anything.
