AK dug up and shot

We've all heard the stories about this type of thing, and I always halfway assumed it to be an urban legend somewhere in the realm of "don't flash your lights or gangsters will kill you".
Kind of cool to see it on film. Shot in South Africa, digging up old weapons caches. This one has been buried for 18 YEARS. They pour some motor oil on it, and empty a magazine through it. Pretty cool, I think.

Starts at around the 1:50 mark for those who just want to skip to the good 20 seconds of the video.

David Hackworth, author of About Face, wrote of digging up an AK and some dead Viet Cong or NVA that had been buried for some time (not 18 years, tho). He scraped off the mud, told his soldiers "Let me show you what a real infantry rifle is" or words to that effect, and ripped off a mag (30 rounds) on full auto.

I particularly liked the bomb technician's t-shirt:

Sure it'll fire, but will it hit what it's aiming at? If not, it would seem to be in perfect working order for an AK!

What is this nova-hot? Does it taste like cinnamon? And Fisk, I'll dig up the link for you so I don't have to retype it.

Very interesting .... only verifies what I already knew the AK to be though. Only reliable rifles are interesting....

Cool link. The cartridge, within it's intended range is certainly capable. An AK will also never be "bolt gun" accurate. But, I doubt anyone would volunteer to go stand at the 200 yard mark to see just how inaccurate a quality AK with good ammo can be.

AK are designed to engage best in urban areas up to 70 meters or less. Accuracy is expected to be 4-5 MOA with iron sights, that it is hitting 8" black circle at 100 yrd. this accuracy is enough to hit a man size target at 100 yrd. The slide on the AK is basically a tool of wishful thinking.
With the new A74 and it is new rd, expect 2-4 MOA with iron sights.

with commie conscripts and iron sights, sure.
There's plenty of documentation out there proving you wrong (some in the link I provided). A modern AK with a quality optic and ammo (exactly what the AR guys would insist on using for any accuracy claims) is easily capable of 1-3 moa at 100 yards. A 74 variant chambered in 5.45 is capable of the same type of accuracy, but at longer distances due to it's flatter trajectory.

Why do you say that? Is the 5.45x39mm round inherently that much more accurate than 7.62x39mm? I would have thought differences between manufacturers/armories (barrel and build quality) would far outweigh any differences attributable to caliber.

the new round is faster, lighter and has lower recoil too. Many would confirm that the new 5.45x39mm is more accurate than its predecessor.
