I had to smile at the euphemism the article used about this Marine Staff Sgt.:
"Although he was painfully wounded as he moved to care for the disabled men, he continued to shout encouragement to his troops and to direct their fire so effectively that the attacking hordes were beaten off,
Yeah, I'll bet he was "shouting encouragement".

Great story.
I do have a problem with so called media outlets referring to recipients of military honors and awards as "winners"! The Medal of Honor (and all other honors) are earned sometimes at price most are not willing to pay.

While I understand that the emotion the words convey. Earn and win are synonyms and in some dictionaries they are used to describe each other. Again I understand that the word make you feel diferent when you hear/read them they are not wrong to use it. That's just my opinion maybe someone with a litterary background will come in and make me look a fool.

Actually, most members of the CMOH Society refer to having been “Awarded” the medal, not earned or won.
I know from first hand knowledge from my wife’s uncle who was awarded the medal for action in WWII.

That was indeed a TERRIFIC story. I went and found a page with Capt. McGinty's citation. Five NVA downed with an original 1911! In addition to everything else he did during that battle. I'm glad he got his pistol back and what he did in return when he got it was a class act. Thanks for posting that...

A great story, and a highlight of two truly honorable men.
Also, a reminder to me that my grandfather's 1911 is one of my most prized possessions and that I am lucky to have such a concrete reminder of him.

The Marine's valor is quite awesome. But let's not forget the "buff" that went beyond placing the gun in his collection, to actually tracing down the owner. It's akin to finding a wallet full of money, then finding the owner to return it all. Bravery and honor....they're never really far apart from one another, are they?
