I just got my passport photos done for my renewal, and as I was being photographed digitally I remembered hearing from somewhere that digital photographs were not to be used. Has anyone had any experience, pro or con, with using digital photographs. It sure made it easier to crop to the right size, etc. DMG.

I used digital photos with no problems.

That has been the official line for as long as I've been teaching. It has been said in all the instructor schools I've gone to....NO Digital Photos.

I asked specifically because we were wanting to begin doing photos and fingerprints as a part of our classes, but the old-fashioned cameras were too expensive. The office staff at DPS responded to me that digital was OK as long as it was high resolution and taken according to the instructions.

We've been using a good digital camera for a couple of years now and have had only a couple of photos rejected. In one case, I could never tell what was the matter with the picture. Everything seemed fine to me.

Having seen the pictures DPS produces for driver's licenses, they can't be too discriminating.

I am using a 6.1 megapixel camera at the finest setting, and Epson PictureMate photo printer. This is an itty bitty printer (not as big a a 2 slice toaster!). It prints two photos on one 5X7 sheet, and they look great!

I'd be very surprised if anyone at the CHL Unit could tell a modern commercial digital photo from one that was shot on film. Especially at passport size.

Linda, are you using a specific photo program to "size" the pics to passport format?

No. I didn't want to have to use a PC at all, so I practiced with the camera until I figured out exactly how far away I need to be from the person. For my camera, that is 6 and a half feet. That gets the picture just the right size.

After I shoot all the students, I just pull the card out of the camera and insert it directly into the printer. I program the printer to print 2, 2X3 images of each shot on each 5X7 page. They fit the photo holder just fine.

This little Epson PictureMate printer really is great. It's small, easy to carry, and has a rechargable battery pack so I don't even need power for it. It can be programmed to print 1, 2, or 4 images per page. And it even automatically corrects the images for color and contrast before it prints. I know there are lots of new compact photo printers on the market now, and the prices have come down. HP, Kodak and Canon all have similar printers. I bought this one about a year ago for less than $200. It has definitely been worth the money.
