Being a new CHL-er, I wonder if I could tap into your experience and expertise for some direction...

One of my favorite handguns (as I have about 5 favorites )is my Sig Sauer P229 .40 Stainless. When purchased several years ago, it came with 2 magazines. One of these mags has been in my 'hunting box' that has traveled with me for years. Upon receiving my license, I started taking inventory on all things I could be using on a daily basis. I noticed some surface rust on the outside of the mag, yet it doesn't APPEAR to be inside the spring mechanism. From this point, I am asking for reccomendations. Remove the rust (and how?) and use it or toss it and buy a new one (as it may be unreliable now).

See if the rust will come off with Soft Scrub. If not, I'd replace it.

Unless the rust is really horrible, you should be able to restore reliable function by doing the following:

1. Disassemble the magazine.
2. If the spring is rusted, order a replacement.
3. Remove the rust anywhere it appears (including inside the magazine) with an abrasive pad you can get at Home Depot. It comes in different grades denoted by color. Blue may work, green is the most abrasive. A rust solvent liquid may be helpful here. Even a light oil like WD-40 will work if the rust is not deep.
4. You don't say if the magazines are stainless or blued. If blued, you'll need a good cold blue formula to restore the finish. Brownell's has a few good ones.
5. Lightly coat the outside of the magazine with a rust preventative film (EEzox or any number of others). The best ones are the ones that leave a dry non oily film.

Surface rust will come off with a pencil eraser.

Options! I love options! It is blued by the way. I will try these out and hopefully have a new magazine.
