The Lone Star Flight Museum, which has been in Galveston since its founding, is moving. Hurricane Ike caused tremendous damage to irreplaceable aircraft and memorabilia. The location of the museum (adjacent to Scholes Field) makes it vulnerable to future storms.

The directors of the museum are in negotiation with the city of Houston to move the museum to Ellington Field (south of Houston near Johnson Space Center).

Been there. Very neat place....but I like the move. Not a great idea to have irreplaceable historical items in storm surge range.

Went to a city sponsored fuction there about seven months before Ike and was impressed with what they had. I thought their setup was almost as good the CAF museum in Midland / Odessa. The CAF museum itself was bigger than Galveston but from what I remember the Lone Star Flight Museum had more planes on display.

I feel for the city losing this jewel but at least it's staying in the area and everything should be safer at Ellington; at least from the storm surge which seemed to do most of the damage. There are many "one of a kind" items both planes and display items that need to be protected; once they are gone ; they're gone and there is no replacing them.

There really isn't a justification for having the museum in Galveston. It was just an accident of history. I agree it is too risky.

Ellington will be a lot more convenient for visitors, especially given its proximity to JSC. They draw the same audience.
