My Oldest son joined the Navy January 2009 DEP and shipped out to Great Lakes September 2009. He graduated from Great Lakes November 2009 as a Grad and Go flying to Goose Creek for Nuke School. Well he's finally graduating from nuclear school next week. He got his permanent duty assignment for SSBN 734 (USS Tennessee) based out of Kings Bay Ga. However the Tennessee is stuck in Norfolk for the next two years for refueling. He also found out that they're sending him to New London for thirteen weeks for nuclear welding school. So it seems with him chomping at the bit to go to sea he'll be a dry-dock sailor for two more years.

So this is gun related he said that he's going to volunteer for boarding party for the ship.

I thank him for his service and he will have a wonderful adventure when he makes it to Sea.

That's one of the best jobs in the Navy. They do not take just any old body for that position. Tell your son to take all the training he can get. He will be very marketable when he leaves the Navy.

Yes, much better than being a Gunner's Mate.

Thank him for his service and remind him that even though he is not at sea, he is getting sea duty credit, or at least that's the way it worked in my day.

I spent a almost 3 years up there going to school and on my first sub, USS Philadelphia.

I would expect him to go to BESS (Basic Enlisted Sub School) for 5 weeks as well while he is there. Once he gets qualified, he should have plenty of time to also finish out his degree, should he choose to. 2 knots to nowhere gives guys a lot of time to think, or study, or play cards/dominoes.

Another thing, there is a creature that is known to lurk around the bases in Groton/New London called grotopotamus. They are female, rather large, known to frequent Navy bars and have an affinity for drunk Navy guys.

The daughter-in law just called. They just found out that the Tennessee is out of dry dock and back at Kings Bay. So it looks like he'll be a wet water sailor sooner than he thought. Go Navy.

Congrats to your son! I hope he enjoys his time, and good choice in jobs. Nuke is def a good way to go, its marketable when he gets out, and pays more. He will look forward to the re-enlist bonuses--they are something like 60 grand for those guys. Tell him welcome to the Navy from me!
