So my wife is off on a trip next week and I'm at home on dog detail. What are the rules for carrying up to the security checkpoint? I obviously won't be going through but Hobby in the morning time isn't the most welcoming area.

...carry CONCEALED in any part of the airports that doesn't have controlled access...I routinely carry up to the point they go through security and from the baggage area out...if there's an escalation that changes that...they'll notify us...

In Texas, you're "good to go"!

In other states, check the laws. Some states don't allow carry in the terminal at all!

Contrast this to NC, where there is a big "No Firearms" (has force of law in NC) sign on the main road you drive into RDU.

Speedsix called it first, only once have I gone into the baggage area when I had someone else with me at my car so they wouldn't tow it. I helped my mother with her luggage. I was nervous even though I knew I was fine as long as I did not go beyond the secure areas. Long story short, don't approach the metal detectors and your fine!

Kind of off topic but at Bush they had 30.06 stickers on the door of all the terminals. They were not one inch lettering by any stretch of the imagination and they were not contrasting (White lettering no back round). I noticed a few months ago that they took the stickers off most of the doors. I don't think they would be en forcible anyways due to the airport being city owned. So yeah I am sure Hobby, Bush its all the same carry away just don't get in line for security or the smurfs will be all over you.

Except the San Antonio airport. It's posted 30.06. Ugh.

Ignore it. It is government owned and 30.06 is not enforceable.

LOL, that I'm not surprised about. Course, it's WAY too easy to get a CHL in NC. All you have to do is hit the target, in or out of the circle and can carry anything, unlike TX where you can only carry a revolver if you qualify with a revolver.

If you qualify with a revolver, you can only carry a revolver (license is NSA). If you qualify with a semi-auto, you can carry either (License is SA).

I thought the NC class I took was WAY, WAY better than the TX class... but that was entirely due to the instructor.
My NC instructor was a firearms instructor for the County Sheriffs department and had lots of teaching experience.
The laws are surprisingly similar, along with the concepts around escalation/de-escalation. Some important differences in TX, certainly.
I also thought the NC course of fire was more difficult. It required drawing to fire from a holster (not from concealment), within the specified time. About the same number of rounds, IIRC. This was back in 1996/7 (?), maybe things have changed. The most unsettling thing about the NC course of fire was the other dozen students, several of whom should not have been allowed to take the class until they had a basic shooters class under their belts (same for my TX class). The course of fire was SIMULTANEOUS for all students. Standing next to an inexperienced shooter drawing and firing their weapon was.... unnerving. Yes, the NC target was bigger (you just had to hit the silhouette), but I thought it was more difficult overall.

I still have family and friends in NC... and the beaches keep me coming back regularly

I got my first concealed carry license when I lived in NC that was about five years ago. The laws are similar except one biggie...You can't carry concealed in ANY restaurant that serves even a drop of alcohol ! And yes, the beaches are incredible !
