I think I am going to shooting clay (skeet or trap), but I don't currently have a shotgun. My 13 year old daughter want's to try it with me and is pretty excited about the prospect. I think a 12 ga would be a bit too much for her, so I am starting to look at 20 ga options.

Mossberg seems to be the most common low priced option. Any reason to avoid them? Any other recommendations for this type of shooting?

Never had one but everyone I know that does likes them. I would buy one, especially if Walmart has em.

I would suggest taking a look at the Yildiz youth modl at Academy, it is an over/under and could be perfect just watch for the sales.......

+1 on the Yildiz, it's a nice over under and the price cannot be beat.

For skeet you would be ok with a 20Ga (skeet being shot with four gauges). For trap you be at a disadvantage against all the others shooting 12Ga. With the right load in a proper fitting shotgun with enough quality, weight, and/or soft recoiling semiautomatic, she would be fine with 12Ga.

The Yildiz at academy gets good reviews.

If you want a semi automatic gas gun which shoots a little softer look at a Weatherby.

Are you a PSC member. I started shooting clays out there in April. It's a lot of fun and not as easy as it looks.

Yes, I just joined earlier this year. That is what has got us both chomping at the bit. I have only shot skeet one time, and that was after a hunter safety course when I was a teenager. I remember it was really fun.

Sounds good. It's pretty busy in the mornings with the A list shooters. They usually thin out by noon or so.

Looks like you are a experienced board member so I'm sure you know about shopping for firearms.

I wound up buying my semi auto shotgun from Carter's Country. It's a gas gun and shoots softer than a o/u. They had the best across the board selecton to handle and choose from. Bass Pro Shops was a close 2nd option.

If you are after a o/u yeah the Yildiz from Academy is a good fit in a good price range as a starter gun.

My Wife uses a Remington 870 20ga. youth model. With the 20" barrel and shorter stock it's proven very easy for her to wield and recoil is manageable. She's petite so it's a great fit for her.

My wife also has an 870 youth in 20ga., but it was still too long for her to reach the forend easily. We found an 11-87 semi auto that she now uses. The forend is longer because it doesn't have to move like the pump on the 870. It works great for her. Either the 870 or the 11-87 in 20ga youth is pretty inexpensive.
