The bill is expected to pass easily in the Conservative majority Parliament.

According to Sara MacIntyre, a spokeswoman for the Prime Minister, this bill is a "priority" for the government.

Critics, though, have blasted the registry as ineffective and wasteful, and say it does not improve public safety, but rather targets law-abiding shotgun and rifle owners.
Well duh!!!

Now if they can just get the rest of their firearms laws fixed... My EDC, which has a barrel shorter than 105mm (about 4.13 inches), is apparently illegal to even possess for Canadians.

I didn't know too much about Canadian firearm laws, so I figured I would look it to to satisfy my own curiosity. For those interested, here's a brief summary and link:
Wikipedia.org wrote:In large part, personal ownership of firearms in Canada is restricted to sporting and recreational purposes (hunting and target shooting). With the exception of specific business uses, the Firearms Act of 1995 and the Criminal Code of Canada provides very limited recognition for self-defense as a reason to acquire or possess a firearm in Canada. An authorization to carry can be issued for protection of life in specific circumstances, but only a few have ever been issued in the program's history; this would allow a firearm to be legally carried for protection. The Criminal Code allows reasonable use of force in self-defense; thus, while guns can rarely be acquired for self-defense, they can be used for such in certain circumstances.

I'm really surprised. Canada is nuts about guns. I was stopped for over an hour entering the country with my car and its Texas plates. They believe we are all buckaroos.

Canada Customs employees are not representative of the views of the general Canadian population. Yes, many Canadians suffer from believing unfair stereotypes, but not all.

The bill was introduced by an anti-gun conservative govt that subsequently suffered a huge defeat in the next election,
only to be replaced by a more anti-gun liberal govt.
