My father-in-law was searching around with his metal detector and found a Stoeger Cougar 8040F burried in the mud. After cleaning up it is in fairly good condition (considering). The spring broke, may need another part or two. I am looking for a parts list/assembly diagram - is there an easy way to get those (.pdf file somewhere)? Or am going to have to write to Stoeger or Beretta (didn't Beretta use to make them but now Stoeger does or visa versa)?

Wow, cool thing to find, all I ever found with metal detectors was a horse shoe, a musket ball (near San Jacinto battleground), and shears.

Still, dunno if that's "good fortune" or "bad"

Wonder what criminal ditched it and what would happen during a traffic stop when the serial number is run.

Wonder what crimes it might be tied to that he could get blamed for.

If stolen, used in a crime and ditched, I wonder if the rightful owner whose home was burglarized had any sentimental value attached to it.

My dad found two 50 dollar bills in a parking lot at a mall once and took them to the lost and found, weeks later they gave it to him as no one claimed to have lost them.

He went by this guide:

Last year I found a Ten dollar bill on the floor in a checkout lane at Walgreens, There were some people behind me who looked like they needed it, no one claimed it, I gave it to them; the cashier then said "oh wait a minute, and rang up my items with some coupon discount .... saving me ten dollars. Kinda weird coincidence.

Still, that's a neat thing to find ... I like Stoeger Cougars
After several years, my AMT Backup which "disappeared" was "found" and I carry it a lot .. I wish someone would find my German made Stainless Walther though. I actually bought it in the 1980s after reading about a farmer who lost one in the mud while plowing, and found it 5 years later while plowing, and it hadn't rusted and still worked.

...I'd find a cop to run it through NCIC and check it against crimes in the surrounding area/counties...better to find it stolen now than after you had to use it...or a family member did...and then find out it's stolen or was evidence that, matched with a bullet from a crime, could have put the original owner away...before he killed someone else...more likely it was ditched than lost...


...shame that he found it and picked it before it was done growing...an 8045 is a good thing...

Toddlinder, would you mind sharing where your FIL found it? I am not wanting a specific site, just a general place like a farm, park, beach, etc.

Speedsix - yes, I am hoping he does a NCIC check on it (he knows lots of LEO's in his area)

fannypacker - he found it near an old dried up pond (near a highway, Humble/Kingwood area) - certainly adds to the theory it could be ditched.

True. This drought uncovers all kinds of things, including towns lost when rivers were dammed to make lakes.

You won't get in trouble if you ask the sheriff's office to check for you, but if you're caught with a stolen/wanted weapon, your gonna have a lot of explaining to do You could also check http://www.hotgunz.com/" onclick="window.open(this.href);return false;, although I have no idea if the database is really up-to-date. From my perspective, it helps to have a piece of paper from the authorities stating it's not listed as stolen.

Stoeger Industries is a subsidiary of Beretta. The Stoeger Cougars are made in Turkey using the same machinery that Beretta used to make the original Cougars.
