I took my Mosin and SKS out to the hated Quail creek range to zero the Mosin with my new scope and just shoot the SKS. I am interested in long range shooting however before I go and blow a ton of money on hardware I figure I should make sure I can even hit a target. So long story short I have a cheap 6~24X50 scope mounted on a UTG rail on my rear sight not the best setup as I have to mount the scope way forward so the bolt don't hit it,the scope cost $54 delivered to door. I was shooting SPBT 150gr rounds at 100 yards resting on sand bags for support. Here is the result after I finally got on paper. All in all with better hardware I think I can do better. I did not embed the images as they are large.

Any day on the range beats a day at work!

Have you spent much time shooting rifle, or is this relatively new to you?

Other then Army 20+ years ago no rifle shooting.

Then you've got some good times ahead!

Was that with or without the bayonet?

I call both targets "MOM" (minute of man), which is right in the performance envelope for either rifle.

without, I can't see shooting it with a scope and the bayonet just would not look right.

It took me about 60 rounds to get to that point so I was wincing with pain at each pull of the trigger. I think I can do better with a better setup but this was enough to at least show me I can get on target. Now to convince the wife how much she needs a new rifle so we can go shoot some pigs.

I've read a lot of reviews on the rail set up for Mosin Nagants and haven't tried it yet. Seems some had issues with it holding zero. You have to use a long eye relief scope unless you have the sniper type bent bolt. Somewhere I saw a scope set up that lets you use the iron sights from underneath, but haven't been able to find it again. Let me know how that scope set up works out in time. I may try it out on my Mosin.

Elm Fork has a new 50 yard range that they'll let you shoot FMJ with open sights or scope, that may save on ammo, since you can use the surplus stuff.

I have only took the rifle shooting once with the scope mount so I can't say anything about it coming loose at least not yet. My end goal, if I keep all this is to use the dove tail rail under the rear sight and use either an adapter or just use it for mounting scope. I bought 2 mounts for the dove tail but have not been able to get the rear sight off.
My scope has a 3"-4" eye relief however I was using like 8" I will post a pic later makes it hard to see. I saw the same mount you were talking about but not sure where either. I was trying to work on the cheap so it was not in the ball park. Between my 2 unused mounts $10,UTG mount $35 , scope $54 and rifle 150 I only have maybe $250 invested in all I know I paid to much for the rifle, I am at a point I could have just bought a 770 at CTD.

That may be the only way you can set up a scope on a Mosin, I don't really know. But it does seem to me that the axis of the scope is unusually high above the bore of the barrel, and this would force you to have a poor cheek weld, affecting your accuracy in turn. If there were some way to mount that scope down lower, I'll bet your groups would tighten up.

If I go with a bent bolt and get the rear sight base removed I can get to the dove tail rail and mount lower it is all just a matter of just how much money do I want to sink into it. The rear sight base is really stuck and my next option is either a gun smith or some kind of a cutting tool like a dremel I am leaning towards a smith.
