Was reading a thread on a different forum about draw times and how long it should take to get a good shot off. Got me thinking, always a bad thing.

Some carry a BUG, often some type of pocket pistol. Lets say that you are walking toward where you are parked and you notice a group of nice youngsters wearing baggy paints slowly converging on you, including from behind, so you can’t just leave the situation, bug out so to speak. (I don’t think people with baggy paints are a protected group so don’t think I’m profiling here!)

You have your nice compact high capacity auto loader in an IWB holster at 3:30 and are carrying a couple of extra magazines. You also have a small 38 snub in your off side pocket. If dog rockets hit the proverbial fan, which gun do you first use?

In my case I suspect my BUG would become my primary gun since I could assume a good grip on the gun without pulling it from my pocket. Would just look like a guy walking with a hand in his pocket instead of some one reaching for a gun. I would think that drawing the BUG would be much quicker than drawing the main gun from the IWB.

If it does hit the fan the 38 might give me time to reach cover and draw my auto. Plus if the dog was constipated and this group of baggy paints youths were really just a boy’s choir going to a practice session at a near by church no one would be upset with me just having my hand in my pocket and not looking like I was trying to grab a gun.

Trying to be funny here but it is a serious question. Could it be that maybe our BUGs could easily become, or maybe be, our primary weapon and the main carry gun become our BUG for cases when more firepower is needed.

Could it really be that our BUG is our primary and our primary really our BUG?

I bought an LCP for occasional pocket carry when carrying my G23 was not practical. I have found that I rarely carry anything but my LCP now.

It is so much more comfortable than carrying my glock and I never have to worry about concealment issues.

I figure, 99.9% of my life I will not need a gun. During the 0.1% of the time that I might need a gun the LCP will do the job for 99.9% of those situations. Could I find myself outgunned? Absolutely, but that is always a risk.

I guess I'm not really answering the question, so my answer is that what you might consider a BUG is probably more than enough gun for any situation you find yourself in.

I am in the same circumstances as 'tall mike'. Pocket carry an LCP most of the time. About half the time I also carried my Sig P230 as my primary, the LCP as BUG.

For most daytime trips, relatively close to home, I now just carry the LCP.

That's part of the reason I carry a bug ... multiple locations on my body I can reach, as you illustrated-->situationally dependent.

All mine are loaded with the same ammo when I carry:
Glock 26 IWB (but with 20+1)
Keltec P11 front pocket (12+1)
and.... maybe others
"Never show your hole card" "Always have something in reserve"

My LCP is with me almost always. My .38 snubbie not. And I have become acustom to having my hand on the LCP wherever I am at. It is just a simple pistol to hold in your pocket and conduct other business one-handed. I would think it would take a second or barely more to have that LCP at the ready while my hand is on it.

I have often wondered… and I’m sure some of you folks can give me the answer to my query. I am ambidextrous and can do most things with either hand. Although I can do most things with either hand, I chose to do certain things with one or the other. I write, eat and brush my teeth with my left hand. Some other things as well. I shoot hand guns and rifles right handed although I shoot as well left handed. It just seems more natural with my right. I shoot a bow left handed. By the way I am left eye dominate if that matters. Anyway to my question… Pants with a flap or buttoned back pocket always have the flap or buttoned pocket on the left back pocket. Why do right handed people carry their wallet in their right back pocket? It seems to me that the natural choice would be to carry your wallet in the buttoned pocket for security.

OK… so as not to hijack this thread… I carry a Sig P238 in my right back pocket and will more than likely go for it first because of easier access. I also carry a Kimber UCII at about 4 o’clock which for me is an easy draw.

I am right handed. Always have carried my wallet on my back left pocket. Only thing on my right back pocket is a handkerchief, business cards and a comb.

I'm similar to you in that for the most part I'm ambidextrous. Get really strange looks when I play a game of tennis or racket ball with someone who doesn't know me. Right handed one time then the next left. (Huh? Wasn't you using the other hand? Who me? I've always done it this way! Then change back next game. )

Amazingly it took very little time to adapt to carrying my wallet on the other side.

That always kinda fascinated me.

See I was tested, and I'm mentally left handed.
However, I have no left hand from birth.
Never kept me from doing much because I adapted, so the Psychologists and Psychiatrists who tested me said I'm not physically handicapped ... just mentally handicapped. (seriously because I'm mentally left handed, but have no tool over there )
And, on the IQ test, my IQ was 2 points below Einstein's ... so they called me the "mentally handicapped genius" (weird huh? sounds like an oxymoron, but ...)

When I got my CHL, I switched from back pocket right side wallet carrying to carrying wallet (cards etc) in a smaller business card type case in a chest pocket, and a separate moneyclip for money.

My guns are in numerous places on me so they are handy wherever I reach in a "natural looking" response to "gimme your wallet and phone".... although I may give him my phone first, and while he stares at a deactivated free 2003 model 911 phone with unbelief ... I may do something else.... situationally dependent
