I am just curious of others safety system in regards to storage of your carry gun. I personally have a pair Cannon Safes which are no long available (at least I cant find them) which I bought at an Academy sporting goods store about 15 years ago or so. I have one at my home in my night stand and the second one is bolted to the floorboard of my car and has been since 1998. Of couse I simply moved it from vehicle to vehicle as I replaced cars. Funny thing is that some of those who carry a gun have not really put a lot of thought or effort in keeping the gun secure and these are smart, educated people. I would think that most of us would appreciate the consequences of our gun getting into the wrong hands, ie. children or bad guys.

Personally, if the gun is not on or about my person, it is locked up. Anyone else care to share their "storage system" or mindset?

Use a "Console Vault" in my truck. Various safes and quick-access lock boxes around my house.

I have young children, so this just adds to the necessity to keep em locked up.

Agreed that access to guns should be limited to authorized users. In the house we have a safe that most everything is in except for carry pistols in use, an air rifle and a .22 for quick-access varmit control. For the vehicles, we got a keyed-alike set of three nano vaults - one for each vehicle and one "floater" that stays in my wife's car most of the time. These are tethered to the seat frames of the front seats via an aircraft cable and are always under the seats out of sight. I am sure that they could be defeated pretty quickly by someone really intent on defeating them, but they are a deterrent against "smash and grab" type crooks.

If you want to do away with the need for keys altogether, look into "Combi Cam" locks on Amazon.com .... these come standard on the Console Vault and I've now replaced all my other key-cam locks with these so I no longer have need for a key to get to my guns quickly.

If they were for use in or around the house, I would definitely consider replacing the locks with the combi-cam. Since they are primarily for car use -- where we already have our keys -- there isn't a real need to change the locksets so we have left them alone. An additional consideration beyond having the key available is the ability to manipulate the lock in the dark -- insert the key and turn is fairly easy in the dark or without looking.

Although I got it from Wal-mart years ago. It has a plate that can be bolted down and then the safe secures on top of it - so it can be temporarily removed if needed.

It used to be bolted in my closet - but I moved it to the inside of my bedside table - it's a pretty beefy table.

...everyone in my house is qualified, trained, and/or licensed...granddaughter is 3 1/2...our guns are loaded and stashed for a 2-second retrieval and not locked up...a supervised child would have trouble touching any one of them...and we don't allow unsupervised children here...

I keep one of the $30 lock-boxes in each car, tethered to seat frame or trunk. Mine are not keyed alike, but I keep the key on the same ring with the ignition key.
I get the large boxes, so I can keep a full-size 1911 or similar in there all the time, with reloads. If I need to secure my pocket weapon to vote or to go into a forbidden place, I can remove the reloads and place my pocket pistol in with the larger pistol - it holds both.

Do you unlock every time you get in the vehicle? If not, what do you do if your keys are in the ignition when you need your gun?

My car key comes off my "main" key ring. MAR unlocks his box when he gets in his vehicle, but typically the side arm is in our holsters. The boxes are for the rare event we can't carry where we are going. We have two boxes in my vehicle as it is the "family" vehicle if we are going together somewhere this is typically the one we use. His truck has one, but they are easy to move if need be, and if we are careful, both of our carry pieces can fit in one..... like a puzzle.

I find the boxes nice too as they keep the gun a more reasonable temperature in extremes. I can't carry where I work, so it is nice to not have to tuck a super hot or frozen chunk of metal in my waistband when I holster up!

All my guns, except my carry pistols and an air rifle are kept in a gun safe. One carry gun is on my person at all times the other is usually unsecured in my chest of drawers we have no kids living with us. I can trust my wife no to shoot me with it, she'd just use her own.

I do have a nano on my Christmas list for my truck, for those times I have to disarm.

Guns not used are kept in a safe. Not fast enough should you need in an emergency. My gun stays on my person until bed, then nightstand. Then back on my person in the morning. we also have a clock that looks normal, but the face swings out holding a full sized and other magazines. Hidden in plain sight.
