Apparent robbery goes fatally wrong

Two men were fatally wounded and two others taken into custody early Wednesday after homeowners in east Harris County opened fire on them during an attempted robbery, the sheriff's office said.

Robert Deleon Jones and Jonathan Garcia were fatally wounded in the 3900 block of Crosby Barbers Hill about 2 a.m. Garcia died at San Jacinto Methodist Hospital, and the other man died at Memorial Hermann Hospital.

Investigators said they were told that Jones, Garcia and two other men had been attempting to rob the residents.

The unidentified homeowners apparently were within their rights protecting their property and will not be charged in the shootings at this time, sheriff's Sgt. N. Araguz said, but the surviving men — Charles Duran and Rodney Jones — face charges of aggravated robbery.

They won't learn; they'll just get their drawers in a knot that the residents had the "audacity" to fight back.

Geez! Four of 'em? I hate those odds. Glad this turned out okay for the residents.
It looks like the criminal element is starting to utilize the "strength in numbers" philosophy. I really need to get a rifle. I wouldn't want to face four men in a dark home with just my pistol. :???:

Inside the home buckshot is your best friend. I keep a loaded pistol with 2 - 7rd mags of 45acp whose only purpose in life is to get me to the 12ga. pump.

Dh and I have been talking about getting a shot gun. I think we might pick one up at the next gun show. Dh wanted to get one at the last gun show we attended, but I told him that he already bought me a 1911, and we didn't needed to push the Christmas budget that much.

ETA: Having talked with other gun owners and pricing them, a quality pump shot gun isn't too expensive compared to quality hand guns. It really isn't a bad investment.

Shotguns are incredibly effectively, short-range weapons. Pumps in particular are relatively cheap and very reliable. My favorite is the Remington 870...Mainly because I haven't managed to break one yet.

Having said that, in this particular robbery, I'd much prefer to have an auto-loading rifle. My primary home defense gun is a well maintained and tested AR15 for that reason. I know all the risks of urban rifles but I also know all the benefits and I see the rifle as a superior choice. The real downside is the cost...You can buy as many as four 870's for the cost of one AR15.

I personally choose a 12ga. with #4 buck with my 9mm and 2 spare clips(16 rds.) as backup. All of that is backup to my German Shepherd. I lay odds on her being the first to the scene. Crooks? We don't have no stinking crooks.

Isn't it amazing how most criminals will go in a different direction after hearing a very basey sounding "WOOF!, GROWL!!, BARK!!!, BARK!!!! GROWL!!!!!"

I need more guns!!!

An AR in .223 is much better than a shotgun. Shotgun has:

1. Limited round (8 typically)
2. Heavy recoil, very difficult for female to shoot
3. Deep penetration with slug loads
4. No way to take precision shot - if a badguy puts a knife on your daughter's throat.

My end solution:
GET BOTH!!!
I have always wanted to get an "evil black rifle" for home defense and to have in the truck JIC. But, a shotgun never really entered my mind. I know what kind of AR I want, but now I need to start researching shotties.

Friend-
I would have agreed with you until a few weeks ago....my visit to Front Sight allowed me to see some of the shotgun training that goes on and the shot you described above is very possible with the proper training. Many of the targets are specific to this very situation. I do agree that I would not want to take that shot with a shotgun.
