This is a tragic story about a woman who lost both arms after being attacked by her dog in her house last Thursday.

Merkel woman mauled by pit bull

A Merkel woman was mauled in her home by one of her pit bulls Thursday morning and had both arms amputated as a result of the attack, officials said.
The 110-pound dog was shot and killed by Merkel Police Chief Bob Jones who arrived at the woman's home while the attack was in progress.
''That's the only way he could prevent any further damage,'' Officer Sid Reyes of the Merkel Police Department said.
KTXS-TV identified the woman as Vicky Jeffries, who is in her 40's. She was taken to Hendrick Medical Center, Reyes said.
The dog apparently turned on Jeffries when she attempted to break up a fight between the full-grown animal and a smaller pit bull, also owned by Jeffries, Reyes said.
The smaller dog ran out of the house during the shooting and was found a couple of hours later.
It is being housed at a nearby animal shelter, Reyes said.

That's sad. You really have to know larger animals like that if you choose to have them, especially the ones that have often been bred for agreesion.

Folks like that need a poodle or something - and even then becoming complacent with any animal is asking for it.

This attack was not "quick." Ms. Jeffries' mother was in the house at the time. She is elderly and on a walker. She attempted to stop the attack by pouring water onto the dog. Finally, Ms. Jeffries told her mother to "call someone" because she felt the dog was going to kill her.
You are right, she had no business owning this dog. Ironically, she probably got the dog for protection.

Probably, but there are other breeds that are better suited for personal protection as well as loyalty. Not bashing pits, but they are not well known as being loyal.

Pits are bred to never turn on humans even during a fight. Dog fighters, as reprehensible as they are, at least have the common sense and sense of responsibility to keep that instinct intact.
This dog weighed 110 pounds? None of the true pit breeds reach that size.
Any dog weighing 110 pounds, which will turn on its owner during a fight, is a result of cross breeding with non-pits, and inbreeding for size, and is a "pit bull" only in the sense that it's a highly muscular dog with powerful jaws.

The responding LEO had to fire twice with his 12 gauge, the first round did not take the dog down.
Lady had two of these dogs, she made the mistake of getting in between them to separate them while they were fighting.... perfect recipe for the ensuing tragedy.
The attack and mauling of her arms lasted nearly 30 minutes. Her husband said one hand was almost completly torn off, both arms were torn down to the point where bone was sticking out.

That's a sad thing. Easily prevented if she had been packing a pistol. I don't carry all the time in my home, but I'm not worried about where my German Shepherd's loyalty lies............

I agree. Thats why I have a German Shepherd. She is only about 80 lbs but she is loving and loyal. I feel for anyone who tries to mess with my home.

Thats sorta what was going through my mind as I read this. In the last 2 days I have read 2 or 3 posts involving pit bulldogs and the visiousness and unpredictable attacts of these dogs. One day a man was turning around in my drive. he was in a pickup with a pit bull in the back. I was in the yard and my collie was sitting in the drive. The pit jumped out and ran for my collie as fast as it could. The dog didn't slow up to sniff or to see if my dog was male or female, it just attacked. The owner and I ran to pull him off my collie( not too smart) and finally pulled him off,without getting bit. The man apologized and left. He then backed into my mail box.( accident I guess). then another apology. The point is, are all pit bulls like this ? I have never heard anything positive about pit bulls. Any of you own one ? What are they like ?

Different breeds have different instincts. The instinct to not turn on a human has been bred into the pit breeds just as deliberately as the instinct to attack other dogs.
It's no different from a border collie's instinct to herd, or a corgi's instinct to nip ankles, a hound's instinct to trail, a terrier's instinct to dig, or a greyhound's instinct to chase prey by sight.
