I have a real quick question, can I as a tourist(I'm visiting Texas in April) go to a range, hire a gun and learn how to shoot?

I know of no law or laws preventing you from doing that.

I think it's the law in Texas that everyone is required to learn to shoot.....tourists included.

As long as you're not otherwise prohibited from doing so just like any other American. You know, like convicted felons and such. Right?

Agreed. However, ranges can have their own rules about rentals.

I am sure a forum member would be happy to take you out to try your hand at it. If you are coming to the San Antonio / Austin area, I know my wife and I would be happy to take a fellow Irish shooter out!

I'll check out the different ranges for regs etc, I'm visiting San Antonio. TAM I just read your sage words on marriage/divorce and thank you, I needed them today. God really does bring us messages were we least expect them.

You will find Texans--and particularly members of this Forum--especially friendly and accommodating.

If you want to post the date(s) and location(s) of your visit, you very well may not have to rent a gun at all: you may find volunteers who would freely provide both several firearms as well as personal instruction.

In my professional life, I've entertained many visitors from countries that prohibit firearms. The idea of visiting Texas and learning to shoot a handgun has been of high interest to most. And many of us on this Forum are thrilled to take the time to introduce a new shooter to the proper safety, use, and care of a handgun.

I live northwest of Houston. If you might be anywhere near my area, I would be happy to set aside a morning or afternoon of instruction, and will provide several firearms. I am an NRA Range Officer, am NRA certified to teach Basic Pistol and Personal Protection Inside the Home, and have other certifications to teach advanced defensive handgun.

Introducing someone, properly introducing someone to shooting and the shooting sports is something many of us go out of our way to do.

No need to check the ranges rules on rentals. I have several different guns you can use. I may not be Irish, but as PBWalker said, I would be happy to go to the range and help out. rifles, Pistols, or shotguns, your choice.

Rental ranges will often hold your drivers license when renting a gun. Some will not accept a foreign drivers license.

If you're coming to Houston, I can assure you that I and several of my shooting buddies would be more than honored to host your first shoot, and offer you a wide range of options to try out.

Assuming you are here on a legal (non-immigrant or immigrant) visa, you can possess a firearm for legal hunting or sporting purposes. Illegal aliens are not allowed to possess firearms.

When I was shopping for my first handgun I stopped at one range where there was a Hungarian couple and 3 folks from Japan there to rent guns. I don't know what kind of visas they were on, but between rentals and the nice people here you shouldn't have a problem.

Let us know how this works out when the mystery tourist shows up and "hires a gun".
