On Sunday, 11/27/11, I was listening to Tom Gresham's Gun Talk. A man from Houston called in and said
that he was new to handguns. He had gone to a nearby range and shot 4 semi-automatic pistols.

The guns he rented were a CZ <P06?>, a Smith and Wesson Self Defense (not a Sigma, not an M & P),
a Springfield Armory XD (model/caliber unspecified), and Sig Sauer P229 or P239 (I forget which).

He had no comments about the Smith or the XD, but stated that he hated the Sig (no further elaboration).

The gun he chose to buy was the CZ. Tom Gresham commented that pistol preference comes down to that
old saw: What feels good in your hand will differ from what someone else likes.

Any CZ fans care to comment on why the Houston newbie made the right choice? :-)

Well not a fan but I have shot two and liked both. A 75 model and one of those CZ- Dan Wesson 1911s and both were very high quality firearms. I would take the 1911 over any Kimber or Colt in 1911 I have shot. I think the only reason they are not as popular compared to the others you mentioned is that they can get a little pricey, name recognition and people who are not in the know say "CZ, that's a cheap Czech gun". Which we know is not true! Many people only know Springfield, S&W, SIG, Glock etc. Just like FN, I know several who have never heard of them either. CZ has to be one of the most unappreciated handguns or firearms for that matter in the US market!

I am also a newbie. At 60, took intro to handgun class, read a lot, fired a total of 150 rounds total before CHL course/qualification. Used S&W M&P 9mm, which felt good. Took waiting time to hold and ergonomically evaluate different auto loaders. The two best [neither an M&P] - for my hands, my inexperience, and wallet - are what I now own, carry and shoot. While there are other potential (future acquisitions) candidates, the "feel" in my hand indeed, was the deciding factor for my purchases. I look forward to practice and carry. It is like shoes - those that fit poorly never are worn. Those that are comfortable are worn often. I concur with Tom Greshem's thought.

So after all your evaluation of pistols between your CHL class and now, which 2 pistols have you decided are for you?

I've only ever owned or shot one CZ(40-B) and I tell ya what...I really like it. Its quite the rock and had eaten everything I've ever feed it.
Its pretty accurate and a breeze to clean.
The only complaint I have about my particular pistol is that it didn't have a very high production run so after-market parts are hard to find.
Other than that I love it and carry it in the cold weather months.

I'm actually made it my project gun and plan on putting a little money into it after the holidays.....night sights, trigger job, new grips and a duracoat job.
It aught to be pretty slick by the time I'm done with it.
