For Christmas I have a brand new Arsenal Ak 74 and need a place to shoot it.
In Houston, what is a range that allows non brass cased ammo and high powered rifles. Ie I am going to be firing surplus steel cased ammo through it.
Thanks

What part of Houston are you located?
If South Houston, there are many of us who are members at PSC Range and I am sure someone who likes rifles should be able to take you there to have a bit of fun.

I'm by I-10 and Gessner. I looked up PSC and it sounds awesome. Too bad that membership is closed. That looks like one fun club.

American Shooting Center has a long rifle range.

You dont need to be a member if another member brings you in (we are allowed to bring in 2 guests at a time) - and we dont pay for guests
but it does look like other ranges are closer to you

Try Hot Wells, Hwy 290 and Barker Cypress area.

AmericanShooting centers is close. I looked at their website, but could not figure out if they allow steel cased ammo? Also do they allow shooting rifles standing, kneeling or prone instead of at a bench rest?

Today I went to the Arms room and sent my brand new Interarms/Arsenal USA WZ 88 in 5.45. The Arms room was great. One of the few ranges that allows steel cased soviet bloc ammo.
Most of the ranges around town said either no rifles, no steel cased ammo or only shooting from a bench rest.
The Arms room was wonderful. A well run range. They allow silhoute targets, shooting standing with a rifle and using steel ammo. It was a very well run range.
I thoroughly enjoyed my new rifle. It was very accurate, reliable and down right fun. The kick was negligible, follow up shots were swift.
All around a great day.

American Shooting center will allow steel cased ammo, but only allows rim fire standing at 25yds I believe. All other rifle shooting is from a bench at ranges from 50ds to 400yds or so.
