I just got my first sig, a p220 elite dark. I read the manual and quite a few web pages on how to clean and lubricate the firearm. I am comfortable with the slide but i cant find anything that addresses how to clean and lube the internal firing controls within the frame. Does anyone know how to clean and lube these areas without having to detail strip the gun? Im used to glocks and normally, i just hit the internals of the frame with gun scrubber and add a drop to the connector. Ive read Flork's lubrication guide but that mainly addresses the rails. Thanks for the help.

I have found the cleaning vidoes on the Sig website, http://www.sigsauer.com/CustomerService ... uides.aspx" onclick="window.open(this.href);return false; helpful. I dont own the same model as you but it appears the info the videos contain apply to all of their semi-autos

It looks like those Sig videos only go as far as field stripping. To get the trigger mechanisms and such, you will have to take apart a bit more.

i watched those Sig videos before i got the firearm and i agree, it mainly covers field stripping. i just figured you would have to clean and lube the internal but it looks like that requires a detail strip which goes beyond field stripping.

The short answer is no, you can't do a full and proper cleaning and lubrication without detail stripping the gun. However, you can probably get by with only doing that once to twice a year, depending on the volume of shooting you do. What I'd recommend doing is picking up this DVD http://www.topgunsupply.com/sig-sauer-a ... eries.html. Its a great tool to walk you through the whole process of breaking down and reassembling the gun. Plus, theres some other good info on there as well.

The nicest part about it though, once you've done it on your 220 several times, you'll be able to do it in your sleep, and the same basic process is used on all the other metal full framed Sig pistols.

I've never seen the DVD, but I generally don't recommend paying for information when it can be obtained freely.

In more than 35 years of shooting, I have never taken a trigger group out of a gun to clean it. I take that back... I cleaned some cosmolene(sp?) off the trigger group of an AK once. I have used a product like gun blaster to spray it into the trigger group. It seems to work fine. My everyday carry is a PM9 I have owned for several years and it has had more than 3K rounds fired through it...again.... I just spray some gun blaster into the trigger group on occasion. I am not sure I think it is a necessary procedure.

I took the grip panels off when i cleaned it just to see what it looks like. There are some parts that are coated from the factory with what looks to be mil-com grease. I also found a webpage on the apex website that has the lubrication of all the internals after a detail breakdown. I guess what i need to start searching for is how often it needs to be detailed stripped. Im guessing not too often so we shall see what i can dig up.

I will be checking out the DVD Sigm4 suggested because i have read a lot of positive things about it.

On my Sig, the trigger pull feels gritty, which is why sometime I want to clean it out and put new grease in there.

The stuff that comes smeared on Sigs from the factory is a protective "gunk" for lack of a more technical term. It won't necessarily hurt the gun to shoot it with it in there, but do yourself a favor and clean it all out and replace it with the appropriate grease before you head to the range. As someone mentioned above, you can use a product like gun blaster to get it out without detail stripping the gun. I will say one thing though, I find it fun and somewhat relaxing (I'm weird) to take my Sigs completely apart from time to time. If you're mechanically minded, it'll also teach you a lot about the how the gun functions.
