Ok guys, Money aside what are your opinions on the best made 1911 ??? Kimber, Wilson Combat, STI, Colt ??

It's really hard to do better than an STI.

I'd go with an STI.

Made in Texas, by Texans (Except the Spartan, which is still a good gun) with great parts, and they are a significant contributor to the practical shooting community.

Les Baer would have to be on my list.

Just bought my first sti today and have to admit, it really is a fine pistol.

Money aside, I would have to decide between a Les Baer, Wilson Combat, STI custom, Springfield custom, and deciding on each individual part by myself with a gunsmith to assemble it (true custom, one off).

I would probably choose an STI custom since they are made here in Central Texas and I like that idea.

I love my STI. My husband's Taurus does a fine job too, though. Overall, I'd have to highly recommend the Taurus for carry. My husband's Taurus has eaten everything he puts down it without complaint and is very reliable. My STI also eats everything I put down it, but because of its tight specifications, requires more frequent cleaning than the Taurus. That's alright - it shoots real nice. :)

If you get a chance to fondle a Dan Wesson 1911, be sure to check it out.

I have a V-Bob (bob-tailed commander) that blows away anything I've handled. The frame & slide are both made of forged stainless steel. All of the internals are machined tool steel. The fit & finish is beyond superb. The slide-to-frame fit is amazingly tight, but as smooth as butter.

This thing has to be handled to be believed. It also costs at least $1000 less than a Baer or Wilson.

Yeah.. Dan Wessons are definitely worth the mention. That's one of my dream guns..

Nighthawk Custom makes some highly regarded 1911s too. The think about Kimbers (yes, I have one) is that they are nearly (but not quite) custom quality guns for production quality prices. In that regard, they are not a bad deal. And I have no complaints about my Springfield Loaded model either. "Custom gun" money would buy you a very nice Springfield too. That said, if you have "custom gun" money to spend, I would get a custom gun: Les Baer/Wilson Combat/Nighthawk/Etc.; the reason being that if you end up buying a high end production gun when you could have afforded a custom gun, you'll always wish you had bought the custom gun..........just for the experience of owning one.

Alternatively, you could just send me the money and let me make that decision for you.

For the money, quality, fit & finish and reliability........
