I was a passenger in the backseat of a car with 5 people. We were pulled over and anticipating being asked for my ID I had both licenses in hand. The girl next to me asked what it was and I told her it was a CHL. She was like...ARE YOU ARMED RIGHT NOW?! She started completely flipping out almost to the point of screaming. To get her to shut up I said no, I'm not armed, then lied again and said I was required to show it reguardless. At that point she calmed down and was pretty cool. Thank god the cop didn't ask for my ID or I'm afraid of what she might of done.

So then moral of the story? You tell me. How would you of handled it. Would it of been better to tell her I was armed completely legally and taken my chances?

Never really know what it would take to calm the girl down so I will conceed that you did what had to be done because it did work. For sure, if you had been asked for ID tell the LEO the truth. No matter the response from others, keep your hands still & visible. Dont reach for her, anything, or anyone. That will not be the 1st time he has delt w/ hysterical passengers & will be his responsibility & her problem from there. DONT TRY TO HELP HIM.

I have been asked twice for ID. Once was a trafic stop. Both I was alone.
I have thought through what I will say if ever asked w/ others in the vehicle that do know. We are being stopped. "Remember I have a CHL & am armed. When the officer approaches, keep you hands where he can see them & remain still & quiet unless he asks you a question."

Those who do not know. I will wait until the officer approaches. My liscense, CHL, & Ins are all back to back in the same slot of my ID case, not in billfold. Hand all 3 to him & tell him, "Sir, I do not know for sure what the response might be from passengers in the vehicle. I have a CHL & I am armed."

I am sure there are a few issues in life that just being 57 make a little easier. I had the opportunity to learn the comfort issues at a time & age when it was acceptable and accepted. Today it is still acceptable. Read the 2nd A. For some it is not accepted. Learn these & choose some different friends.

Friends dont' let Friends ride with liberals or maybe wait until the officer asks before pulling out the ID.

Like John, I would not have done anything. IF the officer ID'ed me then I would show both and wouldn't feel the need for a verbal statement of any kind unless he asked me a question.

Very good! I don't offer info at all durring a stop. I figure the officer knows what he wants to know.... or something like that!

But then can you imagine how fun it would have been if the officer asked for ID and then asked if you were carrying? Guess you know who to forget calling on your next outing!!

As for my answer when someone who doesn’t have a legal right to know asks if I’m carrying, the answer is always “No, I’m not carrying a gun�. But it’s very rare that I get asked the question. Most folks I run into (including the anti-gun people) seem to assume everyone is unarmed, so they don’t think to ask the question. It seems the only time I’ve been asked is when they did find out I have a CHL.

The point about the ID is interesting though. Maybe when in mixed company it would be a good idea to put the CHL behind the DL just to avoid such questions as “What’s that?�. Although I’ve always felt the CHL should be on top when you pass the info to the LEO, so switch the order if he/she asked for ID. There’s also the option LT put forward, wait until the officer asks before you reach for it, assuming you’re a passenger, not the driver (that's what I would do).

If you take it out before the officer gets to the vehicle and the passenger does ask what it is, just say “It’s just another ID with my picture on it� and leave it at that. Your not lying to them, and that could help limit the problems if you do end up having to show the officer your ID and the cat is out of the bag so to speak.

I agree with that statement and that is what I would do. I was at the store one day and saw the guy in front of me take out his driver license to show ID for a check and he had his CHL taped to the driver license so it would fold down and be shown with the license. That is not something I would do, but I wonder if anyone here does that sort of thing. I do not see a need to pull out the CHL unless asked for ID by the police.

If I'm the passenger in a car that's been stopped by police, I'll sit quietly, both hands visible, and not speak unless spoken to by the LEO.

If he asks ME - as a passenger - for ID, then, and only then, will I pull out my DL and CHL and hand both to him without comment.

If he asks if I'm armed, I'll answer truthfully.

Totally agree...

My close friends know I have a CHL but we are all prior military so no anti-gun folks there. One has asked if I was carrying. I always reply with "Sometimes" to leave it hanging.

I was checking in at a gun range and the younger gentleman ahead of my had his wallet laying on the counter with his CHL in the window pocket plainly visible, as if he was showing it off. :shaking my head:
