Texas Ranchers using AKs to defend against Cartels

The border is “safer than ever”. So says DHS Secretary Janet Napolitano. Again and again.
Barack Obama has mocked those who say the border is unsafe: “Maybe they’ll need a moat. Maybe they’ll want alligators in the moat. They’ll never be satisfied.”
But for Texas ranchers in the Rio Grande Valley, the border has never been more dangerous. And they are stocking up with the hardware to do the job that the Feds refuse to do – AK47 rifles to defend their property and lives from border violence.

For those who haven't even worked on a ranch or farm, I think the AK is a fantastic ranch rifle.
Most ranchers are going to take that gun, throw it behind the seat, and let it get dusty, dirty and beat to heck.
My father had a pickup growing up where the CD player stopped working before it was a year old because it gets dirty out there in the wind and dust.
Anyway, thought others would find this interesting.

Well, that is the "beauty" of the AK series: reliability. The whole thing flexes too much during firing to ever be super-accurate, but it can get the job done at close to medium ranges. I agree that it could be a good ranch rifle.

All the accuracy you'll need is the ability to hit a man sized target at 300 yards or under. Any modern AR or AK variant is more than adequate for that.
Either way, it's sad people have to carry around a rifle on their own land.

The AK is a perfect truck gun in my opinion. A medium range, hard hitting rifle like the AK is exactly what the doctor ordered. There are so many drug runners slipping across the southern border, those ranchers aren't arming themselves to confront the narcos, but so that they can get away if they mistakenly run across them. But as long as Washington doesn't think there is a problem, I guess all is well.
