I'm wondering if anybody knows if there's any regulations regarding the shipment of ammo. I'd like to send 2 boxes of live handload ammo to a friend.

Unfortunately, FedEx won't take them. I've not tried USPS or UPS yet. Do you have to be an ammo dealer to be able to ship? Or is it just the hsippers company policy?

If you've done it, which shipper/method did you use?

I beleive that UPS is your only option....I do not think that the USPS will ship them.

FWIW, the little packing stores in strip centers will often not ship them if you tell them it is ammunition......they make you go to the warehouse. Good luck.

UPS Ground is your only choice.

Be sure to write "ORM-D" in block letters on the box, because ammo is "Other Registered Material, Class D". That alerts the carrier that it can only travel by ground; it's a DOT requirement, same as shipping any hazardous goods.

Be very careful. The shipment of hazardous materiial by someone not trained in the DOT regulations is illegal and could subject you to a $25,000 fine. I'd contact UPS and ask them what needs to be done. Ammunition is regulated as HAZMAT by 49 CFR 172 and 173.

Agree. In my military career I was required to take HAZMAT courses because my job as Security Forces required us to deploy with ammo at times. The rule was no training, no shipping. This protected the AF from getting into trouble from the DoT. Because they have the ability to ship HAZMAT, they will have to be certified. That costs money so I'm sure not everyone is and that's why they may send you to some particular store/warehouse as was mentioned earlier.

I would definitely give them a call.

Thanks for your replies. I couldn't find anything on FedEx (which
already rejected my ammo shippment), but did find a lot of info
on the UPS web site. It is kind of long, so I think I'll just give them
a call Tuesday.

I have shipped ammo by FedEx. I just packed it up, put a ORM-D label on it and dropped it off at FedEx. Same price. No questions asked. I have found it better not to walk in and say "I have some ammo to ship, will you take it?" The minimum wager at the counter likely does not know and defaults to "no".

Did you attempt to ship at a Kinko's or other retail outlet or did you try at a Fedex shipping center?

I tried at the FedEx drop off at my office, which actually had a list of the items they don't ship (including ammo). I have sent pistols thru them before (fully declared and insured of course). I can't find anything on FedEx's web site regarding ammunition shipping.

Please see my previous post on this topic. I would hate to see someone from this forum get into a legal problem. Under DOT regulations it is illegal for someone not trained in shipping hazardous materials to classify and ship hazardous materials. Below is the regulatory reference to ORM-D material. It is not an exemption from the law only an exception to the labeling and documentation requirement for certain materials under certain conditions.

§ 173.144 Other Regulated Materials (ORM)—Definitions.
For the purpose of this subchapter, “ORM-D material� means a material such as a consumer commodity, which, although otherwise subject to the regulations of this subchapter, presents a limited hazard during transportation due to its form, quantity and packaging. It must be a material for which exceptions are provided in the §172.101 table. Each ORM-D material and category of ORM-D material is listed in the §172.101 table.

so maybe THEY couldn't cause they aren't certified to do it. However, maybe a stand alone store could.

Called UPS today and got the word:

I can send it via ground and must label it with "ORM-D" letters with a rectangular box drawn around those letter. Plus the words "cartridges small arms" above the rectangle. Cannot send it via air.

I shipped 1500 rounds of 30-06 (in two boxes as the limit per box with UPS is 60lbs.) and my one box was 75lbs. I had to goto one of the main UPS centers (not any UPS Store). The lady did not have the ORM-D stickers so she called it in and they said just to write it on 2 sides within a rectangle. I also had to do the "cartridges small arms" on the sides as well. It was funny because there was a cop behind me and he just asked what type of ammo...just curious I guess. I think it only cost me $50 too so it wasn't too bad. Good luck!!
