Renewal Letter - Looking to get back up to speed...

Ok, got the letter late last week...

It talked about this option to take a "Continuing Education" class which would certify me for 10 years...I knew this was coming, but didn't give it much thought after the tweek in that legislative session back in the day...

Anyone else found or taken this "Class" and is it something separate from the traditional course, and or range included type class instruction??? I think most here would know what Imean by that...

I'm looking to get re-certified and good for ten years and not have to revisit the renewal till I reach the ripe ole age of 58...If I make it that far...hehe

If there is not a real concensus of info, I intend to renew the old fashioned way and get together with my ole buddy down in League City once again and renew that way...

For the record, I've always enjoyed going to the traditional class and range time, just to do it...I figure my state fee is now down to $35 buckaroos now with all the veteran and other renewal benefits of having the license (like a ton of other folks here) for so long...Since '96??? Geesh, that was a long time ago...And a totally different mindset and community back then...

We've certainly come a long way since then...

And...I still!!! I still keep looking to find ANY changes in my fingerprints since 1996...Now I hear we have to submit "electronic" prints to DPS (Austin)???

It's my understanding that fingerprints are no longer required on renewals.

That is true. I just completed my first renewal and was not required to submit fingerprints nor photos. They can decide that the prints and/or photos they have on file for you are not good enough and require you to submit new ones, but that did not happen in my case.

The caveat being that, if this is your first renewal since the switch to electronic prints, you MAY still be required to submit a new set.

Yeah, I seem to recall that I was in the middle of my current "term of office" when the old school met the new school...

I guess I need to go get a set of electronic fingerprints, don't think too many CHL instructors have that kind of equipment...

But I am still wonderinf about this Continuing education class to negate the CHL renewal process for ten years...

Guess I'll give El Gato or his daughter a call here in a little bit...

Let us know if you find out anything official.
I am due for renewal this time next year and if I can do a 10 yr thingy then that should take me to the grave!

The 3rd renewal (4th application) does not require a class. Quoted from GC 411.185
To renew a license, a license holder must: (1) complete a continuing education course in handgun proficiency under Section 411.188(c) within the six-month period preceding: (B) the date of application for renewal or the date of application for the preceding renewal, for a third or subsequent renewal, to ensure that the license holder is not required to complete the course more than once in any 10-year period;

It sounds like someone is marketing a ten hour course when nothing at all is required.

On the third renewal, and then every other time, no class is required.

My first impression says scam. It is clear that such a class would have no legal standing as far as DPS is concerned.

If someone is marketing a class, then its coming from the state...The Official letter stated "Continuing Education Class"...I'll go back and check one more time, just to be sure, but that particular verbage sure did stick out...

Its no big deal...I got to call one of these dirn instructerz and see what they say...

"Ohhhh, its you Steve??? No, Come on down and git yerself a class you pilgrim!!!"

I can hear it now...hehe
