The New SpeechJammer Effectively Jams Voices

Two Japanese researchers, Kazutaka Kurihara and Koji Tsukada, have developed the SpeechJammer, a speech jamming gun that can be used to disturb someone’s speech.

The way the device works is fairly straight forward, a direction sensitive microphone and speaker delay the speaker’s voice a few hundred milliseconds and then send the noise back to them, disturbing the speaker and effectively “jamming” there voice. There is no physical discomfort felt and no one else is bothered by the phenomenon.

The two researchers cited libraries and round-table discussions as ideal uses for the speech jamming gun. In a library, for example, the speech jamming gun can be used to get someone who is disturbing the peace to be quiet without having to contribute to the noise while telling them to quiet down. In response to their paper going viral, Kurihara and Tsukada put together a video showing the speech jamming gun in use:

While the theory makes sense, their video does not demonstrate it well at all.

True, I suppose it confuses the talker is all it does really.
This might work well with the some protest/demonstration speakers if their thoughts are partially disturbed already.

I like the idea but... pointing that red dot at most of us here would get a less-than-subtle reaction..

Boy, if they installed this in movie theaters, along with a device to kill
all cellphones' ability to transmit voice and texts, as well as disable all the pre-movie
commercials, I just might go back to watching movies in a real theater. :-)

Unfortunately, I do not think it would work well if you were only reading from a teleprompter. But then again, the one I refer to is already confused.

Old telephone men and baseball announcers are familiar with the effect - you hear your own voice coming back in an echo and processing the feedback stops your speech. If you train, or just are well enough prepared for it, it hardly effects anything. An idiot reading from a teleprompter will not notice a thing.
