Ok, so after reading a review on our forum summarizing the training recieved from the Gunsite 250 course, I am interested. Now, I have recieved fantstic training in carbines and such, but my handgunning skills leave something to be desired.

This class looks fantastic... the length is perfect. The class instruction looks to be well rounded, developed, and detailed. I just don't care to travel to AZ. What other optioons are out there? Here is TX would be great, but I'm ok with travelling if I decide the class is worth it. If I can't find something as good, and closer... I will go to AZ and take this class.

So, school me. What have y'all taken? What do you recommend? What else is out there that you have heard of?

The key being that the reality is that in many/most cases the "CHL holder" is going to already be under attack before even beginning to deploy the firearm.

Surviving attacks in progress has to take precedence in order to live long enough to present the firearm.

That's apparently what happened to George Zimmerman.

Thunder Ranch closed their Texas facility so Gunsite and the Rogers School are probably the closest fixed facility training schools. However, many good trainers travel and teach classes all over the country. Decide what you want to learn, then people can recommend an instructor who does a good job on that subject.

Or you can go to Front Sight if you like Las Vegas more than Arizona.

I just took a level 1 handgun class from Arrowhead Firearms training. It was a two day class and cost $170, plus the cost of ammunition needed....around 500 rounds.

It covered safe gun handling, reload drills, malfunction drills, drawing and holstering, flash shooting, night shooting, barricade shooting, etc. Well worth the $170. I intend to take other classes, like the Urban Rifle and Shotgun classes.

I ,may have to give some business to this pro-shooter instructor. For my wife and myself to fix my left-low shooting bug!

The US Shooting Academy in Tulsa Oklahoma might fit the bill. It's closer, and appears to have a pretty good selection of defensive pistol classes.

I have not attended classes there, nor do I have experience with any of the instructors... A friend who recently started carrying is planning to attend, which is the only reason I know about them.

But judging from the curriculum it seems like they offer some pretty comprehensive courses, and a quick look at their videos indicates that they probably teach a draw/presentation and a retention shooting technique that is similar to what I've been taught elsewhere. In my opinion, that's a good sign.

Might be worth checking out.

Never been there but i hear good stuff. Its in Mingus, Tx which is a couple hours from Ft. Worth i believe. This is the school where they filmed the Concealed Carry School show on Spike. Bill Davison has done some filming on Guns and Gear with Tom Gresham. He is ex british special forces. Here is a write up from S.W.A.T magazine. I have been considering a Pistol Class here.

Tom Givens will be teaching a combined skills class in Longview April 13-15.

Paul Gomez will be teaching in Austin in Sept. 7 "Handling Traumatic Injuries", 8/9 "Integrated Pistol Skills", and10/11 "Robust AK". I highly recommend training with him.

John Farnam will be in Victoria October 13/14
Bob Vogel will be in College Station Oct. 27/28
